Jap
Lunch set: grilled 'bacon' pork with sliced onion and few pinches of grounded ginger, heaps of cut cabbages with salad dressing, regular size bowl of japanese rice, two slices of japanese pickles, egg custard and miso soup. The sauce from grill pork matches in sync with the rice. Price at $9.80
New menu alert! Other than rice bowls, they also serve ramen & Mille Crepe cakes 😋
Yakitori Don. Look at those generous servings of chucky & juicy chicken!! 😍😍😍 Perfectly marinated without being salty & comes with an onsen egg #eggporn A pity the egg was served cold else the meal will be perfect!! I do wish that they will include their usual menu as it's pretty limited choices.
Fortunately, one of the ramen places that they went happened to have an outlet here in Singapore. Tsuta Ramen, a recipient of a Michelin Star back in 2015 in Japan, serves a bowl of noodles that is more equivalent to soba noodles than the regular ramen noodles that most are familiar with. Their most renowned soup base is the shoyu broth, made from a blend of soy sauce, asari clams and chicken. Since the queue was not as crazy when it first opened (people queued in line for more than 3 hours during the grand opening), I managed to snag a seat within minutes and had to go for the full works, the Char Siu Aijitama Shoyu Soba which comes with 4 slices of char siu, bamboo shoot, leek, flavoured egg and truffle pureed in truffle oil. The addition of the truffle created a harmonious flavour and wonderful aroma that whets your appetite as you slurp up the noodles and broth from each spoonful. As expected, I wiped the entire bowl clean in less than 15 minutes. This is definitely my worth it winner for its given price point.

With only $10 in my lunch purse, I thought I wouldn't be able to have a decent meal to satisfy my Japanese food craving. But I was wrong. A former SMU grad shared that I can get a bowl of tappuri (means plentiful in Japanese) Bara Chirashi for just $9.90 at Food Republic @ Manulife Centre opposite SMU. The little yellow minion in me went, whaaaa?!
There I was in a queue at the stall - Chirashi-Tei. Looking at the menu, I have to say that Bara Chirashi is probably the best steal and deal. Furthermore, there is 10% discount if you present your Passion card from Monday to Friday. Thus, I got this gorgeous bowl at only $8.90. 😘
Ramen Nagi is a new ramen stall in Suntec that was already sporting a queue when we went down. Well, guess who's a new fan!🍜
This was the Black King that was mysteriously exciting with it's signature 'black ball' made out of minced pork, black sesame and special spices. Mix it into the already thick broth for an even more flavourful experience. The ramen itself was a tad too soft but still went well with the intense broth that while great, isn't the kind you can really drink. Thankfully, the duo of free-flow pickles (refreshing bean sprout and another spicy, fermented one) kept us slurping on. 👅💦💦
This Buta Ramen ($7.80, +$2 for spicy) is so damn spicy, it kind of reminds me of the the spicy volcano chilli from Ajisen Ramen. While tasty, I thought the noodles was overdone and the soup was a little too oily. Portion was kind of small too. But that portion of Chashu is quite generous.
Really? Granted, the gyoza here are more than decent, but to be rated no. 1 is really quite a big hat to fill... Nevertheless, at $4.80/ 5 pieces, I believe that’s the best value you can get in town. I liked how the gyozas are plump with minced pork, and how the skin is nicely crisp, but I thought the skin felt a little too ‘commercial’. Still, I’ll be back.
Not a typo, but this platter of sushi probably cost less than your plate of chicken rice. Woud have ordered a dozen if this wasn't only limited to 2 servings per pax!

The new pop-up store concept - Tokyo Eater by @shokutsuten serves up 3 different style of Tendon bowls at a really affordable price! They introduce the concept of Chazuke style, whereby each rice bowl is served togther with a bottle (left) of freshly prepared daishi soup made with bonito from Japan to be mixed into the tendon for a light nourishing taste - a really refreshing experience. With no GST or service charge, this is a real steal for the quantity and quality of food! .

Not too sure how true is it when they claim to be the no.1 rated gyoza in Singapore. Nevertheless, they still offer an unique range of variation to the traditional Japanese dumplings, including their signature smoked mentaiko as well as the Tako Gyoza which is signature to the Plaza Sing outlet. Its almost everything you can find in the original Takoyaki balls (flakes, squid check) but wrapped in a dumpling instead!

Fresh salmon sliced and torched with Mentaiko mayo. At only $10 per bowl (upsize for $2), this is definitely a steal! No wonder this has become one of the more popular go-to places for Jap food. Do note that they tend to sell out 1/2 hours before closing (Maki was sold out when we tried to order), so come down early!

Sliced Roasted Pork Shoulder on Japanese Rice topped with fragrant butter sauce. Apart from its Michelin-stared Ramen, @tsutasingapore also offers a really great range and affordable selection of side dishes to add on to your mains! I had this in addition to my mini Ajitama Shoyu Soba ($7.50), which made the whole presenation of the dishes look like a half-and-half option.
