Really love the succulent and generous pieces of sashimi that Sushiro offers. Yes you pay more đź’° but you also get the quality your 20 bucks deserves. The only downer would be the sauce that was a little too strong and a little too generous that it was drowning the rice.

For the price, the broth is reasonably thick and flavorful. This chashu and onsen egg were also on point. Looked like a small portion, but I was surprised how full I was after. Definitely worth a try!

Could taste the sweetness in their seasoning which is arguably tastier than Teppei's which is slightly saltier. Felt that they could be a tad more generous with the scallop pieces but right now I'm just being picky. Give their unagi a try too, it's really fresh! •

Fried rice was mediocre and the pork although slightly dry was rather flavourful. Gyozas were standard, add a splash of vinegar and chili oil to complete the package.

P.S. HTW is a measure of whether the dish is "Hearty, Tasty, Worthy"
Despite the thin slices, the beef was sweating out juices with each bite. Pretty crazy. But I was more interested by the ALL YOU CAN EAT buffet over at Gyuu+ Yakiniku Grill (for 70 bucks you get as much A5 beef, scallops, salmon and more...) HTW: 3 / 5 / 1 (only because you could opt for the buffet at Gyuu+)

Wasabi was also not the real kind. For a couple more dollars, I would prefer to have my chirashi from Teppei where I know I'll have my fill. Then again maybe it's cause this was takeaway (but consumed within 30 mins). You guys be the judge for yourselves! •

Saw Cephas post about a new sushi place at The Star and since I was around the area, I thought "why not?" But I decided to go for something different, other than the Heat Wave which he recommended. And so I got the Dos Amigos.
It isn't that I didn't enjoy it, I think overall it tasted really hearty, with the very full flavours of the eel and teriyaki sauce coming through, balanced with the mixed textures of avocado, tobiko, and crunchy tempura flour. However, what threw me off was the cream cheese, which I thought was unnecessary and didn't really complement or fit in with the rest of dish as the cheese overwhelmed the rest of the flavours at times, sticking out like a sore thumb. Also, my experience was also affected by some expectations, because looking at the roll, I was expecting something more traditional and standard for the filling (yes I did not check for the exact ingredients).
Lesson learnt: trust Cephas' reviews

Hokubee ribeye bites with furikake rice and sweet vinegar
After raved reviews, I am slightly disappointed at this dish. The furikake rice tasted too grainy and cheap, with the vinegar having not much of an impact. I liked the beef but to be honest, it was slightly tough to chew at times - nothing very impressive. In fact, at this price, Chotto Matte's Wagyu Foie Gras Fried Rice seems more worthwhile. The portion (for a guy) is rather small.

To all Fat Cow lovers I raise an early caution for this post as this might offend you but this is simply my two cents worth on my dining experience here.
Having heard and read raving comments from friends and reviews, I came to Fat Cow with excitement and enthusiasm. The prices were an initially turn off as most of the cuts of beef were around $200. I braced myself and hoped that the heartiness and tastiness of the dishes would make up for its astounding price tag.
I was here with my younger brother and our first comments were about the yuzu shoya dipping sauce for the beef. If that were to be our comments, that says something about the beef already, doesn't it? We ordered the Saga A3 Tenderloin ($178 for 220g, top right) as well as the Ribeye - Japanese Wagyu 'Nikuya Moriawase' ($198 for 250g, bottom left). Usually, I prefer Ribeye to Tenderloin because the latter would be a bit too dry and lean. However, here at Fat Cow, I found that the Tenderloin was more tasty and more palatable compared to the Ribeye which was more flavorful and fatty, but also more gelat. From the pictures, it is hard to measure the portion but basically the portion is really small - each steak could fit the size of my palm (ok fine maybe my palm is a bit big), but I am pretty certain that it is half as much as the portion at Morton's or Lawry's.
Thankfully, the Entertainer 1-for-1 voucher came in handy and provided for a 50% off both beef cuts, which cut the bill from $400~ to $200~, which is still a sizeable amount to pay for a less than sizeable cut of beef.
The "Fat Cow Shoya" Rice ($8++) was dismal as it simply tasted like shoya just a little sweeter. As a consolation, the rice was very delicate where you would be able to taste each grain of rice, but for 8 bucks, I'm not sure I would be willing to spend such money on plain rice and soya sauce.
I would still come back again to try their signature Donburi which is only available during lunch. But if I wanted to satisfy my high-class-beef craving, I probably would head to Morton's instead.

With so much hype surrounding it, Tanuki Raw failed to live up to its expectations, at least to my expectations.
Truffle oil was drizzled sparingly, beef was reasonably tender and was featured in small pieces, egg was rather hard and didn't flow, and the rice was too dry. Portion is also quite small as the beef looks much smaller than in the previous pictures that I have seen on Burpple.
For its price however, I would still say that to get such a dish would be worth it. But would I come again? No.
Similarly, the Salmon Don ($12) is also very mediocre, with the rice being more dry without the truffle oil drizzles. Portion and price wise, it is also quite worth it.

Teppei's famous kaisendon/barachirashi that is simply sublime. Each of the sashimi pieces is doused in a seasoning that keeps it fresher and ensures that it lasts longer. I'm not sure what goes into their seasoning, but its definitely a combination of shoya and mirin and some other lovely ingredients which I can't figure out. Each piece of sashimi is thick and succulent, something that is hard to come by even at top Japanese restaurants. It is mostly salmon, with some white fish and clams which I couldn't make out. What impressed me the most was the wasabi. This was not your chemically produced kind that you get from sakae sushi, but it is the real deal wasabi root. You can tell the difference in that you can taste the grains and little bits in real wasabi. Although it may not be of a super high quality, I appreciated that it was from a fresh source, something that I believe is so important for Japanese food to be good. A super value for money purchase!

"I love eating. But I hate getting fat. I love eating. But I only want to eat the best. I love eating. But I'm reluctant to spend too much." The above are a few paradoxes that describe my love-hate relationship with food. Yet at the same time they define my principles for choosing the places which I love to eat: 1) Hearty 2) Tasty 3) Worthy (of my money)
