Singaporean food lah!
Considered one of the best, if not the best, fishball noodle in Singapore, raved by many, Song Kee serves super tasty Fishball Noodle. There are options for $4, $6, $8, greedy me of course ordered for the $8. I am glad the noodle portion is normal and not too big. Make sure you ask for the chili sauce with the noodle which makes a difference as the shrimp paste umami-ness game is strong. The $8 portion comes with three types of fishballs, fried tofu with fishball filing, her kiao (fish dumpling with minced meat filling - Chinese ravioli!). The her kiao was the star of the dish, soft and goey filing. So good, i even then bought the uncooked ones (80 cents per pc, min. 10 pcs) to bring home. Song Kee, I vow to return for more.
My craving and search for good salted egg yolk chicken brought me here. It comes with white rice and the option of a fried egg. Fried chicken bites drenched with savoury sweet salted egg yolk sauce. One of the good ones i've had!
I was there last week for the soya sauce chicken noodle but it wasn't available anymore when i arrived. Decided to order char siu noodle, and instead of wonton i requested for the dumpling. The char siu was good but somehow i got a lean meat part, i believe great char siu needs to be a bit fatty to have that juicy soft melt in your mouth texture. Just unlucky i guess, need to request for it next time! But the star was the dumpling, it is quite a generous size with juicy minced meat wrap in thin noodle.. and it has black ear fungus that gives it a crunch. Perfection!
Third time's the charm! The first time i came here, so curious to try, was slightly after 2pm. Sold out. The following weekend i went there again at 12:30 but the chicken was no longer available so i had the dumpling noodle with char siu, i really like the dumplings by the way, the real deal dumplings! Will post it after this one. So this weekend i thought i should try it again. And arriving there at 11:30 and still plenty of chicken. Woohoo! So i ordered the chicken drum stick and additional two dumplings, it was $6, the chicken was so succulent juicy and flavourful, topped with spring onion sauce. The noodle has no strong alkaline flavour which i enjoyed. The verdict? Yes indeed i have to agree with some foodies out there that this is, in my opinion, is better than the michelin starred soya sauce chicken and no crazy queue!
Also, I decided to buy the uncooked dumplings that i can freeze for future use. They are $6 for 10 pcs. Happy tummy happy me!
I am not usually a big fan of chicken rice however, i quite enjoyed this one. This was my second visit, this time with visiting nephews from Jakarta. The kampong chicken were soft and juicy, especially we asked for the thighs and drumstick, when dipped on the ginger chilli and dark soy sauce, it resulted in good combination of flavours all together, I particularly liked adding the sprigs of coriander leafs into my bites which gave it a bit of herby kick. The set comes with half boiled egg and a small bowl of flavourful chicken broth. One nephew truly enjoyed everything as his palate is quite adventurous as mine while the other nephew who doesn't really like chicken rice thought that he enjoyed the rice the most. The chicken skin were a bit yellowish, i wonder if it is because it is the natural kampong chicken skin colour or they put some kind of colouring as well? These days you'll never know right? We also ordered sambal sweet potato leaves, one of my favourite veggies with crunchy texture. Always a nice place to bring visitor guests from overseas for a hainanese chicken rice!
Made it to the soya sauce chicken noodle at Chinatown yesterday on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch, the one recently awarded with 1 michelin star, queued for 1 hour 35 minutes 😅 was very impressed with the quality of the food, $2.50 (‼️) only for a plate of noodle with generous amount of very tender and super juicy soya sauce chicken. The noodle has a balance and intense flavour with its special blend sauce and the chili. We had an extra drumstick which only cost $2, which was very delicious! I will come back again for the dumpling and other roast meats as they ran out of those halfway the queue 🙁 i would recommend to avoid going there on weekends and meal hours.
Light dinner 😆😜 before durian dessert at Balestier. Pork Ribs Soup, without rice, very strong white pepper soup base, quite spicy. The pork is fall off the bone tender, one of the best in Singapore!
Craved for the ramen at Noodle Story but realised that it is closed on Sundays, wondered around Maxwell Food Centre and found this Mee Pok Stall which displayed "Homemade Ni-Tamago Eggs", i was hooked! Couldn't decide between Prawn ($8.50) or Squid ($7.00) or Fish Maw ($6.50) Mee Pok, i asked for a mix of Squid and Fish Maw ($10.00). It also comes with fish ball, dried salted fish and minced pork and of course half of tamago egg. Very good!
Hearty dinner after a massage in Tiong Bahru, had the raw haring fish drenched with sesame oil chili and ginger and i combined the century egg withe the pork porridge. A bit of extra chili padi for extra kick. Yummm
Showcasing super springy noodles tossed in a special aromatic dressing accompanied with Hong Kong-style wontons, soy-flavoured hot spring egg, meltingly-tender cha-su and a crispy potato-wrapped prawn. Beautifully garnished with freshly sliced scallions and red pepper.
The char siew and pork belly roasts are full of flavours with good distinct char smokey flavour. The chinese sausage is also delicious, not too fatty. One of the best hawker chinese roast meats i've tasted in SG!
Laksa with pieces of prawn, fish cake and cockles with thick coconut laksa gravy, served with sambal and laksa leaves. Very good!
