Burmese Delights in Yangon
Lunch dish, from Shan State. This restaurant is tucked away in a side street and not well known even by locals. Great thing is you have the entire restaurant to yourself and aircon is strong. Food's awesome too.
Stewed pork in black bean sauce - K7,000 per serving
Must-try if you ever find yourself in Yangon. One of the tastiest local noodle variants I've had while galloping across Yangon for work. A steal at MMK 600 a bowl (~S$0.77).
1,200 MMK for a bowl, good for all meals. This store is an age-old local favourite.
Noodles from Western Burma, Rakhine state. Comes in 2 flavors, spicy/sweet. I had the spicy version which was a different sort of spicy from the Singapore spicy I'm used to. Not too much carbs, feels almost "light" enough to be an appetizer.
It's done differently from Singapore. The egg prata is infused in a sweet milk-like sauce. Not bad, just different.
This particular dish translates loosely into "Vegetables stuffed with baby prawns". This local hole-in-the-wall has a long history of serving bus drivers from a bus company. The land it is on was purchased and gifted to the owners by the bus company. The food is home-style Burmese, with free flow top up similar to Korean side dishes. High human traffic especially during lunch. Rice + dishes = yum!
