Went to Katsu-an two weeks ago to try their Loin Katsu and Calamari Fry Teishoku 80g ($12.90)!😇 Overall ratings 9/10! Food was really good and affordable, highly recommend the calamari fry as it is soft and not overly chewy🤣 You are also able to pick the quantity of rice you would like which is great!! Would definitely revisit again😄

For a $1.50 top-up, you get to enjoy Katsu-an's clam miso soup instead of the standard miso soup.

I love the sweet, juicy and plump clams in the soup and there were plenty in each bowl. The soup itself was rich and full of umami. It's a little pricey but I do recommend the top-up!

Besides the pork cutlets, Katsu-an also serves a variety of side dishes such as squid karage.

The squid is soft and has a nice bite and I love the crispy battered crust around it. My only objection though is that it costs nearly the same price as a bowl of their katsudon!

I will be honest and admit that I didn't expect much from Katsu-an's basic $5.90 katsudon because it costs as much as what I would expect to pay for a kopitiam cai png these days!

Each bowl of Japanese pearl rice comes topped with fluffy and savoury dashi seasoned scrambled eggs and onions, and a good sized portion of pork loin. I actually found myself enjoying their pork loin more as the meaty flavours were stronger and the quality of the pork loin at this price point!

Tbh if I am paying $10 for pork katsu, I would be better off with the 'M' chain of hawker stalls. But at $6 per bowl, their katsudon is really value for money considering the location!

And for those who are hungry and don't mind spending a little more, Katsu-an has upsize options ala Sukiya!

The folks behind the Sukiya now bring us the first international outpost of Katsu-an, a Japanese fast food chain serving the much beloved katsudon.

The outlet is located in a slightly hard to find corner of Suntec City but it didn't seem to stop the foodies as there was a queue even close to 9 pm.

For $10, you can get their tenderloin katsu keishoku, a slightly fatty and pricier cut of pork cutlet with rice, miso soup and salad. The pork is thick and juicy with a good bite from the rough panko crumbs but I absolutely love it when it is paired with the apricot sauce, a citrusy and tangy sauce that boosts the rich fatty and meaty flavours of the pork katsu.

Feeling the pinch from the GST hike and rising prices; so I am ever thankful for some fuss-free Katsu-an’s Signature Katsu Don. No complaints from me about their competent $5.90 medium-sized bowl of loin katsu cooked with fluffy dashi-seasoned eggs.
