[CLOSED] IKYU

* This place has closed :( Please try somewhere else. * IKYU does contemporary Japanese with a touch of discovery. Schooled in classical Japanese cuisine, and having worked in the US, France and Japan, Chef Seki creates in the Japanese culinary idiom with a pronounced western influence. From delectable salads to fried and grilled seafood; from hearty meats and the freshest of sashimi to amazing nigiris and rolls; IKYU’s menu is tantalizingly, appealingly, broad. It is also flexible, with set, a la carte and omakase options, and seasonal changes for the autumn and winter. The aim is to extract maximum intensities of flavor from the very best ingredients — including “Uonuma” Koshihikari, known as the ‘jewel’ rice of Niigata, and the world-famous Miyazaki Champion Beef — in often surprising ways that mirror the idiosyncratic personality of Chef Seki.

For $28+ lunch set it's a pretty good deal! Not the best chirashi don I have tasted but it's really fresh!

Originating from Hawaii, the traditional Loco Moco consists of white rice topped with a burger patty, fried egg and brown gravy. Ikyu's take on it replaces the fried egg with Japanese-style onsen egg with mouth watering results as the runny yolk makes a great makeshift sauce for the admittedly slightly dry but still very tasty beef.

This is one of five mains you can pick from their super value for money $28 lunch set which includes appetizer, soup and dessert. We were more than happy with our smoked duck salad amd matcha ice cream which were the items for the day. Best part? This set lunch is available on weekends too!

Smoky and tender, the unagi possesses a melt-in-your-mouth buttery texture that's sure to meet the appoval of those slippery eel connoisseurs. The rice is drenched in the same savoury, sweet sauce that the unagi is glazed in, which was to my liking but others deemed too saccharine. Bonus points for the perfect onsen egg.

Practically erupting with flavour, the aburi'ed "lava" flowing down each roll's sides is lusciously creamy with a hint of sweet, smoky spiciness. Hidden under the molten goodness are 6 precious slices of sushi roll made from premium Koshihikari rice filled with scallop and snow crab. F**k that's delicious.

Freshly flown in every week from Tsukiji, the sashimi is diced and marinated in soy sauce, mirin and rice vinegar for a well-balanced mix of umami and brininess atop the highest quality Koshihikari rice from Niigata prefecture. Loved the fact that there were plump clams thrown into the usual mix of salmon, scallop and tuna as well. Top it off with a glittering blanket of tobiko and ikura for bursts of salty pop and crackle to make this my favourite main course out of five for the extremely value for money $28 set lunch.
