Located in PLQ mall near Paya Lebar MRT station (East West Line). Hokey Poki is a cosy place to have an affordable and quick Japanese style meal.
Having been there for the first time, we were welcomed by an enthusiastic staff.
I ordered a Gyu Niku salad and Bara Chirashi Don.
Albeit on the saltier side, a generous portion of the Gyu Niku salad was served. The ingredients such as the mushroom, were premium especially for the price that we paid.
The Bara Chirashi Don was topped with some chopped up sashimi, avocado and sprinkled with some roe, sesame and seaweed bits. The purple or black rice at the bottom was fragrant and palatable. Both the toppings and rice proved to be a great match. However, it would have been better if the amount of toppings like the sashimi, matched the amount of rice.
Will come back for a casual meal again if I am at PLQ!
Whatcha know about value, son? Oh, we know all about value here. And @hokeypoki is all about that sweet, sweet value. They’ve got a multitude of $12.90++ Shikoku Setto for you to choose from, and all of them come with two main proteins, a bowl of chawanmushi, miso soup, short grain Japanese rice, and a lil’ salad that’s drizzled with the ubiquitous Japanese sesame sauce.⠀
⠀
I invested my money into the Teriyaki Chicken & Aburi Salmon Shikoku Setto and got a pretty princely return on my investment. Sure, the salmon sashimi is diced a touch too tiny, and can become an exercise in frustration to get it all when you’re in a hangry hurry. However, the deluge of flame seared mentaiko mayo that inundates the sashimi more than alleviates that annoyance.⠀
⠀
The teriyaki chicken is simply a chicken cutlet, deep fried and glazed with a drizzle of standard issue teriyaki sauce. However, whatever the chicken was marinated in is truly unique, as the unmistakable flavour & scent of ginger dominated each bite, and there’s what definitely smells like some floral essential oil in there too. It’s definitely odd, but not entirely unwelcome. However, the juicy piece of poultry could definitely use a more judicious application of salt.⠀

Shikoku Setto? More like SHIOKku Setto, amirite?
Chunky sashimi goodness on a bed of brown rice feels both healthy and indulgent. Plus it's pocket friendly prices, hokey poki is on its way to driving casual and healthy jap meals.
($12 for salmon chirashi don, $14 for seafood sashimi don)
For the price and portion of this hotpot, this is definitely a steal! A pot full of ingredient such as mushrooms, toufu, assorted vegetables and inari is filled to the brim of the pot and topped with another big slab of salmon. This pot would have be able to sell for 2-3 times more at those established japanese restaurant.
Definitely a recommendation for me from this place, the price and taste wise is a thumb up for me.
A staple piece of dish for most japanese restaurant that was on the same standard as some of the mid-range japanese restaurant. Would have prefer it to be a little raw-er but probably they are catering it to the younger crowds since this is within a heartland mall.
Chance upon this japanese eatery at basement 2 of PLQ. They have a variety of selections from ala carte dishes to hotpot and don. We ordered their maki roll as interestingly the maki roll came in a purple rice which is a healthier choice. The soft shell crab is wrapped with purple rice and topped with tobiko and savoury laksa sauce. Flavours are put together nicely with a hint of local touch. This piece of fusion food is definitely a well-done to me!
