It's good, the wok hei was there but could have been stronger, seafood was cooked well too. Pork lard was v crispy and full of oomph. Chili could have done w a tad more umami. Overall worth trying if you're in the area, not worth a trip

Literally at one corner of ABC Food Center in Bukit Merah, this stalled is helmed by an old couple. Prices start at $5 for a medium portion (no longer offers $4 small portion) and $6for a large portion.

The fried noodles comes with pork lard and a dollop of chilli paste plus one lime. This is the drier version so those who like their fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles wet and soupy can skip this stall.

The flavour of umami from prawn stock is in there together with just a hint of wok heat. The chilli paste was a bit too salty for my liking. Mixed in the noodles are thin slices of squid, pork and two prawns ($5).

Overall good but definitely not the best. I’ll be back, only if I am in the area and craving fried Hokkien prawn noodles.

People say Tiong Bahru Yi Sheng but I prefer this. The stock used is good, wok hei could be more prominent but even without it it still is decent. They also let you put as much lard as you want which I like even though it’s bad for me.

Havelock Blk 50 Fried Hokkien Mee (which is in abc market instead of havelock, ironically enough) is open from 8 in the morning till 1430 in the afternoon, while the more famous Yi Sheng takes the night shift from 1600 to 2200. Makes me wonder if they’ve got some kinda gentlemen’s agreement going on...

Ah yes, the important question. Which is better? Well, Blk 50’s Hokkien mee is drier and more savoury than Yi Sheng’s, and has more wok hei. However, Yi Sheng’s chili is clearly superior, but Block 50 ain’t no slouch in the chili department either.

Taste wise, both are rather redolent & soul satisfying. The biggest difference between the two is that I didn’t have to queue a full hour for Block 50, so I might just be a little more partial to Block 50.

While the wok hei isn't very strong, chilli isn't spicy enough, this was still hella tasty & the consistency of the zhup is perfect for me. Generous ingredients in this largest portion ($6) as well. Would be happy to eat this again! 😍

Our medium portion hokkien mee came with thin slices of squid, two fresh prawns and slices of pork fried in together. Wouldn't say this is the best hokkien mee around, but it still worked well in satisfying the craving. Noodles were done just nice but I would have loved a stronger tasting broth. Chili was great though!

Wanted to try Tiong Bahru Yi Sheng Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee (just opposite Jin Jin Dessert in the same food centre) as well, but it sported such a long queue that our hungry stomachs couldn't wait for. Maybe next time!
