Reviews

From the Burpple community

Upscale casual restaurant that celebrates Southeast Asian flavours and crossroads.

Starting with savory, we enjoyed the ๐๐จ๐ง๐ž ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ ๐“๐จ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฐ/ ๐‚๐š๐ฏ๐ข๐š๐ซ, an indulgent buttery and creamy bite. The ๐‚๐ก๐ข๐œ๐ค๐ž๐ง ๐†๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ž ๐’๐œ๐จ๐ญ๐œ๐ก ๐„๐ ๐  was a mix of rendang with oozy egg and a crispy breading. Rich and flavourful with a strong spicy kick. The ๐Š๐ฎ๐ž๐ก ๐๐ข๐ž ๐“๐ž๐ž was generously packed and balanced but did wish for the shell to be more crisp.

Moving on to sweet, ๐Œ๐ž๐๐ฃ๐จ๐จ๐ฅ ๐ƒ๐š๐ญ๐ž & ๐Œ๐ž๐ซ๐ž๐๐ข๐ญ๐กโ€™๐ฌ ๐‚๐ก๐ž๐ž๐ฌ๐ž was a delightful sweet and savory mix of feta cheese and date encased in crispy and flaky pastry. Our personal favourite was the mango sticky rice. Also had the classic traditional
kuehs of ๐Š๐ฎ๐ž๐ก ๐’๐š๐ฅ๐š๐ญ and ๐Š๐ฎ๐ž๐ก ๐Š๐จ ๐’๐ฐ๐ž๐ž.

Comes with free flow tea or coffee. We enjoyed the chai which had a spicy finish, and the natural tasting rooibos. Found the matcha on the powdery and almost grassy side.

Food quality: 3.5/5
Ambience: 4.5/5

Ordered cottage fries ($16), Ah Nya's Fish curry ($32) and Octopus Bakar and Sambal Udang ($42)

The cottage fries caught me by surprise when it was served. I was expecting usual fries but it is actually roasted baby potatoes. Quite nice to begin with but got abit too jelat thereafter.

The fish curry dish was extremely well cooked. The fish is tender and goes well with the curry. There is also toasted bread served at the side for us to dip the curry with. The bread has a slight toasted surface (freshly toasted!!) and that goes well with the curry. It also comes with fried long beans that is still crunchy when served.

The seafood dish is slightly disappointing. While we can taste the slight char on the surface of the seafood + fresh seafood used, it was nothing too surprising.

Overall, the restaurant has relatively relaxed ambience is and a comfortable place to chill with friends in.

Had always been looking forward to revisit Hathaway โ€” was pretty impressed by what they have to offer when we made our first visit several months ago when they had first opened, with the Ah Nyaโ€™s Fish Curry still lingering in my head.

Having more pax to share around the food here this time round, apart from having the Ah Nyaโ€™s Fish Curry that we missed, we also went for other items that we have yet to try before, including some of the side dishes. The Black Cod & Razor Clams was something that I especially liked โ€” a dish that would fit those with a lighter palate. Featuring elements such as Deep Sea Sablefish, Hand Dived Razor Clams and a Miso Kombu Broth, what we loved was that light and somewhat milky Miso Kombu Broth that provides for a lightly creamy, yet slightly savoury note that almost replicates that of a collagen broth. The broth adds much of the richness in terms of flavour to the fish โ€” the cod fish was a wee bit dry to our liking but still undeniably fresh; perhaps less smooth considering how they seemingly have flash-fried the fish skin here for that extra crispness for a contrast of texture. The razor clams are also fresh; not seemingly briny whilst carrying a qq texture โ€” what really works well with entire ordeal here will be the nibs of garlic here which gave it a roasty, sweet yet savoury note that binds really perfectly with the Miso Kombu Broth here, providing a much needed flavour to pair with the razor clams.

Itโ€™s pretty amazing to know how Hathaway is a venture by the same folks behind Breadyard; a spot perhaps better known for their in-house bakes that also serves up brunch fare that is typically found in cafes elsewhere. Hathaway is a whole different establishment from Breadyard; one that seemingly exudes some Balinese vibes that serves up their very own interpretation of Peranakan fare with a slight twist. Definitely a spot fit for an occasion that serves up something different for the tastebuds to explore.
