Iāve been eating at Gu Zao Ren for years now, and itās one of those places I always find myself coming back to. Brought a friend along this time, and I couldnāt stop talking about the cocklesāeven before we ordered. Theyāre always so fresh, and that house chilli? I donāt know what they put in it, but itās the kind of spicy that makes you reach for more instead of stopping. Honestly, I could finish that whole plate on my own.
We also got the chai poh omelette, hotplate beancurd, and cereal chickenānothing fancy, just the usual zi char picks, but thereās something about how they do it here that hits different. The omelette is soft in the middle, crispy on the edges, and every bite has that sweet crunch from the radish. As for the beancurdāit came bubbling on a hotplate, soaked in this rich savoury sauce with minced meat and egg. The tofu was silky inside but had this golden crust that gave it such a nice bite.
And of course, the porridge. Their Taiwanese-style porridge is my comfort foodāitās thicker than the usual Teochew kind, with little chunks of sweet potato that make it feel almost like something your mum would make at home. I never leave without getting at least one bowl.
Stumbled upon Market Bistro and it's such a gem tucked away in the heart of the CBDā right in Marina Bay Financial Centre, so it's super convenient. The space itself is lovely and peaceful, a rare find in such a busy area!
The staff were incredibly attentive, and gave great recommendations. We had the baby squid fritters to share-light, crispy, and clearly not the frozen kind. The seafood bisque pasta was rich and flavourful with bits of lobster that made each bite feel indulgent. We also had their popular ribeye steak which was juicy and tender, paired with generous sides of salad and fries.
We were so full, but couldn't resist ending off with the tiramisu, and we're glad we didn't skip it! Light, fluffy sponge with a bold coffee kick made it the best decadent dessert I've had in awhile.
Overall, I would highly recommend Market Bistro for anyone looking for a dinner spot that serves delicious food, great service, and solid value for money.
Derwish Turkish offers a vibrant and satisfying dive into Middle Eastern flavours. Highlights include silky hummus, crisp cheese-filled borek, and a fall-off-the-bone lamb shank in rich tomato sauce. The Mixed Grill is a generous, flavour-packed platter perfect for sharing. Donāt miss the Kunefeācrispy, warm, cheesy, and topped with ice cream. Refreshing drinks like mint lemonade and Mango Ayran round out the experience. Bold, hearty, and full of warmthāDerwish is a delicious taste of Turkish hospitality.
The charcoal peanut mee jiang kueh had a wonderfully soft and chewy texture, with a hint of charcoal flavour. The highlight was undoubtedly the peanut fillingāperfectly balanced with a creamy, peanut-buttery richness and a satisfying crunch. The mix of textures paired with the nutty sweetness was absolutely irresistible ć$1.60
