Tasty soup broths (shark bone and cartilage brewed soup base) and fresh ingredients (kurobuta pork, USA prime beef, prawn pastes, handmade fishballs, prawn wantons etc) are the selling points that keep the crowds coming back to this simple no frills steamboat restaurant along Joo Chiat Road (looks almost fully booked on a Sunday evening).
While I wouldnโt rate it the most budget friendly steamboat option (I prefer the prices over at ไธ้ at Kallang but some compromise on the ambience needs to be made for a cheaper price of $30 per pax as its at a hawker centre), I still appreciated the interesting and unique dishes offered such as the Fish Kway Teow (fish meat in the form of noodle strands-very nice texture) and drunken prawns.
I also liked their version of prawn paste, very bouncy and fresh tasting! Tom yum soup tastes more towards Chinese and not the Thai style, but still holds some standard and kick. Basic sauces - chilli padi with light soya sauce and chicken rice ish chilli available.
Would like to try more of the other handmade items such as herh keow and meat balls in my next visit!
A great alternative to the big names, there is only one broth option here which is the TTSR Special Soup Base. Taking more than 5 hours to prepare the soup base, the restaurant uses both shark bones and cartilage; yes, imagine the collagen rich soup!
There are also tze char dishes like spinach tofu ๐ . The soup quality has been consistently good at this place. It is generally rich and naturally sweet without being salty ๐. .
Where to dine?
Teochew Traditional Steamboat Restaurant
176 Joo Chiat Rd, Singapore 427447
It's clear what most, if not all, patrons at this Joo Chiat steamboat eatery are here for โ the broth. Made from a combination of quality ingredients including chicken and shark bones and boiled for over five hours, the milky-white soup bursts with natural sweetness and is clean-tasting yet flavourful. The Soup Base (from $30) makes a wonderful, lavish base for the steamboat items. Apart from regular meats and greens, they also have several handmade signatures: Pork Dumplings ($5), Fish Kuey Tiao ($5) and Chef's Recipe Squid Ball ($8). This is a favourite among families, and a great place to head to for large extended family meals โ service is quick and the food is bound to be a hit with the elders!
Pro tip: There are outlets in Outram and Sembawang too.
Avg price: $30
