Lala Hokkien Mee

$8.00 · 32 Reviews

I can fondly remember the spicy and tangy assam laksa from Pasar Air Itam but since we are not able to travel there anytime soon, the assam laksa from Penang Seafood Restaurant will suffice for now. Comes with a thick and rich broth, with huge chunks of fish, this is a slurp-worthy bowl that will whet your appetite from your first bite. Another signature dish at Penang Seafood Restaurant is their lala hokkien mee, which is stir-fried to a wetter consistency. Although the wok hei might be somewhere missing in this rendition, it is still a very decent plate that you will not complain if its served to you.

Avoid the queue and come during off-peak hours with foodie friends for a seat at this wildly popular restaurant. Order their La La Hokkien Mee (from $8.00) that sees silky noodles soaked in a flavourful, wok hei-infused broth. Also good is the Penang Fried Kueh Teow ($5) with cockles, deep fried lard, prawns and sausage — one portion is enough for two! Not to be missed is their comforting Pumpkin Beancurd ($18), where silky smooth tofu and prawns are bathed in a sweet and creamy pumpkin sauce, balanced by a savoury mixture of ikan bilis and hae bi.

the flamed chicken ($48) wasn’t on the menu but is seen in most of the table. It was flavourful but size was a little small (should be a kampong chicken). lala hokkien mee was highly recommended by many as well which did not disappoint.

Today is the last day of the Chinese New Year, which is also known as Yuan Xiao Jie 元宵节, Lantern Festival or Chinese Valentine's Day.

I've had a great start to the day with a flavoursome lunch at one of my favourite restaurants, feasting on usual favourites like Lala Hokkien Mee, Penang Assam Laksa etc. This beancurd dish is something new to me. Bite-sized portions of tofu are deep-fried, then drowned in a generous serving of pumpkin-based sauce. The dish is next topped with prawns and an umami-packed paste that is reminiscent of XO sauce. The pumpkin sauce is rather heavy and has a savoury flavour with a faint hint of pumpkin sweetness. For me, one try of this dish is probably more than enough.

They’ve moved into cosier, air-conditioned digs in Aljunied, but we’re happy to report that our favourite Penang joint has kept food standards up and prices low! The must-order is a lard-loaded Penang Fried Kway Teow (from $5) and the wok hei-laden Lala Hokkien Mee (from $8) with thick, luscious gravy.

They have shifted from 76 Lor 25A Geylang to 32 Geylang Road (across the street from Aljunied MRT)

Fermented Pork Belly, also known as Fried Meat in Chinese. Crispy, not too salty, flavour on point! 😘 we had to go for another small serving of this!! 🤪

Stir fry Qing Long Cai, this vegetable dish is light on the palate, quite refreshing too! 👍🏼 Prawn Paste Chicken, well known as Har Jeong Gai. Definitely crispy and prawn paste flavour was just about right. So nice 😋
Penang Char Kway Teow, nice wok hei and generous lap cheong, prawns and other ingredients, a bit too salty to our likings we feel.
Salted Egg Prawns! 😍 Huge prawns, nice salted egg sauce with the right about of chili padi to give it a spicy kick. So addictive, we can’t stop 😝 (we dipped the Fermented Pork Belly in the salted egg sauce, so sinful, so shiok!) La La Hokkien Mee with a generous amount of seafood such plump juicy la la (clams), sotong, prawns. I added sambal belachan seperately because I like it 🌶 It is a good decent hokkien ☺️ Jaded Scallop Braised Tofu. It’s another healthier choice in addition to all the other sinful choices 🤣 this is quite good too 😀

But with big moves, the standard has fallen 😕. The famed #lalahokkienmee wasn’t as thick or rich with flavour as my parents remembered and lacking in wokhei taste. Adding lime & chili did bring out more flavour but made it an average Hokkien Mee. There was quite a small serving of noodles but a generous portion of squid, lala & prawn. The #saltedeggsotong had a delicious rich salted egg sauce and a juicy squid but it could have been better if crispier and served hotter. Hopefully it was just an off day and that the #hokkienmee will return to its rich flavors

Came with plenty of seafood and more importantly, lard. One of the nicer Hokkien Mees around. @penangseafoodrestaurant

Was too full when we ordered so only ordered asam laksa and lala hokkien mee. The asam laksa’s soup is so much thicker than expected that it looks like a sauce rather than soup. The lala hokkien mee is very tasty with wokhei! Be prepared to wait for dishes during Sunday - we waited for these two dishes for more than half hour...
