Uncle was so sweet, the lady in front was trying to decide if to add the last portion left to what she ordered, but uncle said to leave some for the person behind ( me, heh). That’s all they sell, these deep fried traditional carrot cakes but cut unusually in bite-sized sticks. I was a first-timer so silly me , asked if there was a sauce that went with it. Uncle says no sauce, that’s how he’s sold it for decades… need to be able to taste the carrot. It was yummy, served warm. I admire the dedication- selling this one snack for years 👍

There are several different types of carrot cake:
1. The angmoh carrot cake which is a dessert topped with cream cheese;
2. The Teochew carrot cake or chai tow kway which consists of stir fried cubes of radish cakes. It is also known as the white pasar carrot cake. There is a black pasar carrot cake which is pa fried with black sweet sauce; and
3. The Cantonese dimsum carrot cake which is first steamed and often pan-fried to give it a crispy crust. It is usually made with diced pieces of dried shrimp, shitake mushrooms or Chinese sausage for additional crunch or umami.
Deep Fried Carrot Cake at Whampoa FC serves a no-frills version of the Cantonese-style dim sum carrot cake. The steamed cakes are cut to thin strips and placed on a rack to be deep fried in a boiling pot of oil. The purpose of cutting the radish cakes to strips is to increase the surface area for deep frying and maximise the crispy outer crust.
It is simple yet strangely addictive!
I ate these a little too long after dabao so I can't really compare them to Hougang's.
Likely a familiar stall to those who eats at Whampoa FC. A very economical, simple yet tasty hawker snack done beautifully. $2 for these sticks, have them with chilli (great with McD curry sauce) sauce or simply as they are.
