I prefer their Hokkien mee, got wok hei (not too strong), the Hokkien Mee is wet type and quite flavourful. The chilli is 👍🏻, enhance the flavour of the Hokkien mee.

Very juicy and some parts are charred. Not bad.

Mmmmm….very delicious. The noodles is like kolo mee style and there is this sausage like meat. Topped with golden lard and comes with a bowl of soup. Very nice

Springleaf residents rejoice! There isn’t actually a need to travel down all the way to Soi19+ Thai Wanton Noodle at Upper Thomson to get those Thai-style wanton mee cravings solved because there is Daruma Tavern at The Brooks II which is just two bus stops down from Springleaf MRT Station — the concept being a watering hole that serves up Japanese, Western and local cuisine alongside Thai-style Wanton Mee that is opened by the same folks behind Soi19 Thai Wanton Mee.

What brought us here wasn’t the variety of drinks, but it was the Thai-style Wanton Mee (and that was before we found out its relationship with Soi19 Thai Wanton Mee) — was just looking for somewhere to have dinner around the Springleaf area for a quick meal after a workout anyway. Rather than being presented in a bowl just like the ones at Soi19 Thai Wanton Mee outlets, the one at Daruma Tavern come served in a porcelain plate for a change. That aside, the resemblance is pretty much there here — springy egg noodles that has been tossed in minimal amounts of rather clear but savoury sauce that gives it so much flavour; all that accompanied with pork lard, char siew, fish sausage, fried wanton, pork lard, garlic chips and greens, while a bowl of soup coming with the soup wantons are served on the side. The wantons are undeniably well-stuffed with meat and carries a good bite; the fried ones being crisp without carrying any unpleasant, overused oil stench and were not in anyway greasy, while the soup ones come with smooth silken skin — both coming with ample savouriness from the meat. While the char siew was pretty decent though nothing much to shout about, my favourite has always been the fish sausage — a sweet-savoury mix of flavours almost similar to Chinese lupcheong but with a chewy yet firm bite, while the pork lard was fried golden-brown and crisp; nothing like the subpar ones that some stalls serve up being too limp or dry. My favourite has always been to sprinkle some of that Thai chili powder into the bowl of noodles for that additional spicy kick — be warned though; adding just a bit does provide quite a fiery experience for those who are not quite used to how spicy the chili powder can get!

Whilst being of a bar-esque establishment instead of the usual coffeeshop or standalone space that they have been operating as, Daruma Tavern doesn’t forget about the customisable options for the Thai-style Wanton Mee — patrons can still order their wanton mee with black sauce as opposed to the original just like in any Soi19 Thai Wanton Mee outlets, and request for more portions of a specific condiment or replace one type of wanton for the other through the ordering system by scanning the QR code. Whilst I am not usually into such establishments, I am actually intrigued to give their local menu a try, with items such as KL Dai Lou Mee, Hougang Six Miles Stone Fried Hokkien Mee, Bek Bee Hoon and Curry Chee Cheong Fun being those that I am likely to give a go. It is interesting to see how they have went from being just a stall serving up Thai-style Wanton Mee to operating an outfit like Daruma Tavern; but this is no doubt a more convenient location for me to enjoy the Soi19 Thai Wanton Mee experience without heading to the usually-crowded Upper Thomson outlet.
