Heading to Changi Village has always been a bit of an excursion to us — a trip that is somewhat requires a little bit more effort than the usual, and this is how we usually find ourselves eating a little too much almost in an attempt to check off the list of all the food that we have wanted to try in one seating. Having been in operations for several years already would be Changi V. Dessert House, a stall which serves are local hot and cold desserts at Changi Village Food Centre — pretty much those sort of stalls that one would typically find in any hawker centre serving up shaved iced deserts like Ice Kachang, Ice Jelly Cocktail, as well as hot Cheng Tng, just to name a few.

What really made us pretty intrigued to make Changi V. Dessert House a must-visit stall in our recent trip to Changi Village Food Centre was their Cendol — whilst most dessert stalls serving up shaved ice desserts do seem less concerned about the presentation of their dishes, there seems to be a lot more care placed here with their various shaved ice desserts. When it comes to Cendol, Changi V. Dessert House serves up various renditions of the dessert — this includes the usual Ice Cendol, Durian Cendol, as well as the Cendol with Ice-Cream which we have opted for.

Digging into the Cendol with Ice-Cream, we did feel that the Cendol from Changi V. Dessert House was able to match up with the same that is dished out at Cendol specialty stalls. For a start, there was ample coconut milk and Gula Melaka being included in their Cendol; both the coconut milk and Gula Melaka being especially rich and thick — the former adding a sort of creaminess to the Cendol, while the latter provided that smooth, sweet and earthy note that is unlike those commercially-made syrups typically found in supermarkets. Hidden beneath the scoop of ice-cream, the red beans included here came suitably sweet and soft — we liked how these didn’t carry that distinct “raw” earthy note which makes it especially easy to have. We aren’t quite sure if they make their own chendol jelly here, though we found that these were nothing much to shout about and seemed more commercially-made if one judges it by its colour. The shaved ice beneath is shaved to a point that is pretty fine here; the consistency being on-point here without any large chunks of ice that stood out. Topping off the entire bowl of Cendol with Ice-Cream would be the scoop of Vanilla Ice-Cream; again nothing much to shout about on its own, but this was certainly a crowd-pleaser element to the dessert, and helps to add a hint of vanilla aroma that adds on to all of the coconut milk that helps to elevate the dessert further.

Considering how Changi V. Dessert House isn’t quite a spot that emphasises on their Cendol offerings, it is surprising how Changi V. Dessert House dishes out a rendition of the Cendol that would even put some Cendol specialty stalls to shame. Whilst there are commercially-made elements that are used in their Cendol with Ice-Cream, they seemed to have nailed it with their basic Cendol by using what-seems-to-be premium Gula Melaka, Coconut Milk and well-executed red beans that gives their Cendol that sort of depth and complexity of flavours. The other elements just simply add on to the experience itself. The presentation of the Cendol with Ice-Cream is also on-point — there aren’t quite as many hawker centre dessert stalls that take so much pride in serving up their shaved ice desserts; the Cendol with Ice-Cream definitely looked the part considering we were also asked by the folks sharing our table on where have we ordered it from. Considering how we have tried the Cendol with Ice-Cream from Changi V. Dessert House, it does check off an item that we have been itching to try out. That being said, we would most certainly be happy to give their other creations such as the Commando, Red Ruby and even the Durian Cendol a go the next round. Definitely a dessert stall worth leaving some stomach space for whilst at Changi Village!

Finally tried the Commando dessert ($2.30) and I loved it! The dessert reminds me alot of bandung, with the red tea jelly and the milk they added. Really really refreshing. The Chendol ($2.30) was probably one of the best I've had as well. It was filled with really thick and creamy coconut milk and gula melaka that makes it so wholesome. Really rich and delicious! Definitely a must have when you're here at Changi Village!

What seemed to be a common dessert turned out to be a treat for the day. The Power Chendol with Ice Cream (S$2.50) comes with such a generous serving of non-diluted coconut cream, I thought the stall owner was putting icing on the shaved ice! Then with a large scoop of gula melaka (mmmm!). Aunty then flattened the top of the ice mountain for the red bean and chendol to sit nicely before placing that scoop of vanilla ice cream. That combination and proportion: power la!

Stall I ordered from previously was closed so decided to try from this stall!!! Decent Chendol that satisfied 👍
