More Reviews of good food at Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu ESR BizPark @ Chai Chee (Chinatown)

Love their fresh handmade ingredients especially the prawn. I used to eat this frequently when I work nearby. You can upsize your beehoon with no additional charge. They increase price and I also noticed they gave less ingredients now. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The famous YTF from Albert St Food Centre has opened a stall in the S11 coffee shop at Block 504 Bishan. This is a welcome addition to the coffee shop and boasts really long queues during peak hours. I really enjoyed the broth and the various ytf items, but what stood out most was really the fried chicken wing! It was a bit small, but the batter and marinade really packs a flavour-punch (though some may find it a bit too salty).

Given the long queues I see at both the Albert & people’s park outlets, I probably had too high expectations. This was decent, but there was nothing that made me go ‘omg this is damn good’. I liked the ngoh hiang & prawn ball the best iirc. May try it a second time to check if my first impression holds :p

Bai Nian yong Yau foo | A stall with only two years of history and located at People's Park Food Centre, they do a version of yong tau foo that is distinctly different from what you get elsewhere. They only serve yong tau foo pieces with soup and bee hoon, and instead of the normal tofu items, their pieces are emphasised around fillings such as soft meatballs with crunchy black fungus, prawn balls made with pure prawn paste and deep-fried bittergourd stuffed with fish paste.

They have only one tofu item which is a non-fried tofu puff that is denser than the usual tofu puffs you get. The broth has a nice stock richness that is slightly sweeter than usual. Big eaters take note: bee hoon is free flow here. The sauces on the side are the standard sweet bean (similar to hoisin) sauce and a chilli sauce which is incredibly spicy. If you’re not used to chilli, use with restraint.

The original stall is in Albert Centre, and the branch here at People’s Park is their second outlet. They used to have a branch in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur called Century Bai Nian Niang Dou Fu, but that has since closed down. They also only offer a soup version, no dry offering and all the yong tau foo items in every order are set, no alterations. Still, that doesn’t deter the immense popularity of this stall as the lunchtime queues can be insanely long.

There are few stall selling niang dou fu here, with Bai Nian being one of them here. Only one choose available with either $4.50 or $5.50.

Bai Nian is one of the must-tries at People's Park Food Centre. Have been patronizing it since it opened here few years back.

Bai Nian is also known to serve bowls of Yong Tau Foo with standard ingredients instead of those that you get to pick on your own. Each hearty bowl comes with hand made ingredients that include bitter gourd, tau kwa (deep fried bean curd), prawn balls, minced pork balls and the black, white, gold rolls which are stuffed beancurd skin rolls. I can't really pinpoint what's the difference between the different colored rolls but the meat inside was well marinated. For someone like me who doesn't eat bitter gourd usually because of its bitterness, I could actually accept the bitter gourd here, not much bitterness as it's fried. But my favorite has got to be the hand made prawn balls which were really fresh and juicy, and there's so much prawn meat! Same goes for the pork balls that also had black fungus.

The aroma and taste of the clear soup was even better after a spoonful of fresh chopped spring onions was added. You could ask for additional beehoon at no extra cost, or for mine, I didn't want beehoon, so it was replaced with 2 additional pieces of the rolls. Such a craving on rainy days!

Needless to say, this 老字号 has won the hearts of many and invites a super long queue every single day esp during lunch hour! But given the fresh and ample varieties of top ingredients, it's no wonder that I keep coming back here for more! The orders are quite efficient and I usually can get my food <20min of waiting time. Highlight is the prawn ball and the meat ball! ( I always requested for no 苦瓜 but I'm sure there are lovers of it)

S$5.50 for the large serving of Yong Tau Fu at @CenturyBaiNian
Topup S$0.20 for takeaway.
For one who didn’t like bitter gourd, I’m surprised it wasn’t as bitter as expected.

The latter was what caught my eye some nights ago trying to find dinner at People's Park Complex Food Centre that wasn't 麻辣香锅.
:
I didn't know it then, but apparently I was very lucky that there wasn't any queue that rainy night! As with all the other yong tau foo stalls in Chinatown area, the ingredients are fixed, so you only have a choice of the serving sizes. The list of ingredients on the board isn't exactly very explanatory anyway, I mean I get that there's minced prawn, pork and bittergourd pieces, but what are "white", "black" and "gold"? 🤔
:
Despite that muddle, it soon became clear that I made the right decision as every ingredient tasted delightfully fresh and succulent. My favourite was one of the pork pieces that had bits of dried/fried sole fish or 'ti poh' mixed in. The piece that has chopped mushrooms with the minced meat was also very flavourful and mildly crunchy. The $4.50 soupy portion with the thin beehoon and 7 pieces was adequate for a satisfying full meal, and a $5.50 portion grants you two more pieces of the handmade yong tau foo. I was just a little bit taken aback by the bittergourd piece that was a lot more bitter than what I'm used to, so if you're not a fan of that, I think you can request for an alternative.
:
I should mention also that their handmade meat pastes are available for sale! Something to consider for future steamboat gatherings... #Burpple

No CNY shopping is complete without a trip to Chinatown. Since we are there, my mum took this opportunity to visit one of her fav stalls — 百年 @BaiNiansg at People’s Park food centre.
The bowl of subtle soya bean anchovy soup has a variety of fresh, handmade ingredients including prawn paste, fish paste, pork paste, fish roll, pork roll and beancurd that are nicely seasoned and savory taste.

A colleague of mine LOVES having Bai Nian YTF so much that he had 3 bowls in a day - one for breakfast and 2 bowls in the afternoon... he even sent me pix to tempt me.
.
Well, he succeeded cos I started to crave for it...so headed down to People's Park Food Centre on my off day to get me-self a BIG bowl ($5.50) comprising of Bee Hoon (Rice Vermicelli) and 9 pieces of Yong Tau Foo made from prawn, pork and fish paste. As always, my bowl of Hakka noodle soup did not disappoint- so much flavour in that bowl of savoury goodness - broth, noodle and all. Now I’m satisfied...!!

Located at Blk 32, New Market Road, People Park Complex Food Centre, #01-1144 (They have another 2 outlets in Bugis & Chai Chee). A sumptuous bowl of Yong Tao Fu we had!! Comes in 2 sizes, $4.50/$5.50. This bowl is $5.60 and it has 7 ingredients. You can opt in for thin Bee Hoon for the same price and if you opt out for Bee Hoon they will give you an additional ingredient! Every ingredient in this bowl is so flavourful!! It’s not too Hakka or those fish paste YTF as they uses prawn, pork and fish paste thus it doesn’t feel too meaty nor fishy! The soup is tasty and not too salty too! The final touch is a spoonful of freshly cut spring onions which adds so much flavor to the soup! Yummy! #hungryunicornsg #bainianyongtaufoo #bainian #百年酿豆腐 #yongtaofu

Yong Tau Foo 9pcs with rice vermicelli

The ingredients come in a set so you can hardly choose which of the colorful ingredients you want in your soup. For the uninitiated, YTF is a broth-based vermicelli dish with fish paste and tofu. Bai Nian is special for its creative YTF ingredients in muriad of colors, whereas normal YTF ingredients are the same. The tofu are stuffed with delicious authentic fish paste and fried to perfection. You could ask for more vermicelli for no additional price! They are stingy with chilli though - I took another plate and was reprimanded and they ate not exactly cheap. The queue moves slowly and waiting can be 20 - 30 minutes during lunch. Worth a try but I prefer Jalan Besar more! (There are many YTFs in Jln Besar) MerRyan is happy! #merlion #merryansg #burpple #yongtaufoo

You don’t get to choose 6 items. It’s a standard. Good kind of standard. A young man helping with the making of the handmade ingredients, seeing the old uncle who cooks the beehoon, scoops the soup, a bowl of handmade goodness and warmth. I love how real their ingredients taste!
