No branded hotpot or premium meat and seafood but we agree unanimously that nothing beats this comforting and back to basics steamboat.
What we like best is the fresh ingredients and simple, old-fashioned chicken broth and soy beans base that gets more flavourful as we add the ingredients in the soup. We skipped the set and ordered individual plates of ingredients including sliced fish, beef, fish dumplings, cockles and vegetables.
Sadly, they are no longer serving zi char dishes [yes! I miss the ‘pong pong’ prawn fritters] but there’s still the old school steamboat that we can enjoy and appreciate.

Soup stock is made of lotus root which is easily detectable when you first taste it. Refreshing and good taste with fresh ingredients, couldn’t go wrong with this combination and it’s a great comfort food during rainy days. We ordered the prawn paste chicken too and was amazed by how crispy and well seasoned it was!
Great service by attentive staff who will refill our soup regularly etc. They also give u a tissue box which is so convenient hehe, service can compete with HDL alr 😂
Hotplate Oyster Egg - a plate of fluffy eggs, topped with large pieces of plump and juicy oysters in a thick and savoury sauce.

Back at Ah Pang Steamboat Seafood @ Mei Ling Market & Food Centre, after a long haul.
The stall still serves the same traditional taste and food standard as when it was previously situated at the old Margaret Drive Food Centre.

Famed for their "non-msg" broth. Essentially it's chicken and corn soup, in its purest form (according to Mama). It is very light, and very healthy that they have their steady stream of regulars. The staff are prompt, friendly and very alert. Ingredients used are fresh, and the pork is well seasoned in sesame oil. Portion is decent, but please add a portion of chicken from another famed Margaret Drive stall.
It is not as fantastic as how the person who recommended this raved about. But the taste is nostalgic, brings back memories from even before Bugis was littered by Chong Qing steamboat...
Since pricing is a la carte, we don't have to stuff ourselves. This should be the cheapest a la carte steamboat in Singapore.
And for the price, the food is incredibly fresh.. I do not like fishes that are usually used in steamboat (should be toman) as they have what Chinese say "soil taste" (土味 literally 😛). Their fish has nothing of that. The meat was well marinated & tendered. And the prawns are huge!
For those who doesn't drive, the walk down the slopes and stairs to the MRT will help with the full stomach.
