Selamat Hari Raya Haji to all Muslims! Hope you all have a blessed time with family and friends.
Meanwhile, I'm enjoying a bit of ayam penyet ($6.80 excluding rice) from Ayam Penyet President. The chicken is really juicy and well fried. However, I like my chili to be powerful and this doesn't do it for me. Also, the price is a bit steep compared to Ayam Penyet Ria which I prefer.
Not because it came with some fancy schmancy Korean-esque sauce, or had some mindblowingly awesome crust; but cause they nailed what all others haven't: a perfectly tender and juicy chicken breast. Underneath the super-thin yet undoubtedly crisp batter, lay the moist, juicy, and succulent chicken breast. It stole the show.
Unfortunately the waffle was too dense and heavy for my liking (is that how they do it in the states?) and pulled the entire dish down. It's a must-try given the fame that preceded Clinton St; however I probably wouldn't pay S$21++ again for - albeit great - a piece of fried chicken.
Had a wonderful evening at Bottura for their Happy Hour from 4 - 6pm, from Monday to Fridays.
One can enjoy a drink from their carefully selected range of fine wines, refreshing cocktails (like the pictured Americano) and craft beer together with two Italian sides, an arancino and piadina. All for the price of $14++. A plus point is that I got to enjoy the beverage in the comfort of the indoors, away from the haze.
Roasted and BBQ pork rice from the famous Lee Hong Kee Cantonese Roasted stall at Tiong Bahru Market.
The roasted pork is very tender and yummy while the BBQ pork is just average. Also, the rice wasn't warm so it was quite off putting. I don't think it's worthwhile making a special trip down.
One of my favourite Japanese dishes is oden, which some jokingly call "Japanese yong tau foo". Torikin serves an excellent oden (combination of 8 for $18++) with a light soy-flavoured dashi broth that is subtle yet tasty together with various ingredients which make this a hearty and homely meal.
Unsure if you'll come here for your first date but it's a whole lot of messy fun.
I visited Dancing Crab on a Thursday evening and it was a full house. My guess is that everyone wanted to have a unique experience of eating off the table and ignore any form of dining etiquette. We got to don our plastic bibs as we tackled their Combo # 1 (Sri Lankan crab, 300g prawns, 250g clams, corn, potatoes and sausages) doused in their signature sweet spicy Cajun sauce. It was definitely finger-licking good.
The combo is good for two persons and if your group consists of light eaters, three persons at most. There is also an assortment of side dishes and wines to complement your meal.
Overall, it was a fun dining experience to share with friends but probably only if there's an occasion worth celebrating due to the hefty price tag.
I don't consider myself a fan of squid ink dishes as they sometimes are too salty for my liking. However, the squid ink risotto at Alfresco Gusto is fantastic!
The risotto ($28++) is creamy and it doesn't hurt to add a poached egg to coat the dish with a golden layer of goodness. The prawns are grilled perfectly and remained succulent. Finally, the sun-dried tomatoes add sweetness to the overall dish, which balances the saltiness of the squid ink.
This dish left me smiling. But do take note of your blackened teeth!
Love how tender the meat is and the smokey Marmite coating on the surface… making me crave Vegemite as I think about it now. Yum.
A little far out (at Big Splash, East Coast) but worth making the trip for good food & company. Was a fun night tasting at @sunrisebistrobar last night, thanks @sgfoodonfoot!

One of the best wanton mee I've had!
This is my go-to place if I wanted good and affordable char siew. I spontaneously ordered the char siew wanton mee and it was surprisingly good!
What I like best is actually the noodles itself. The noodles' texture is incredibly springy yet easy to chew and the dark soya sauce just adds so much flavour to them. It comes with soup which I like to pour onto my noodles from time to time.
Wahhhhh.
One of my new favourite food places is Garçons. It offers extremely affordable French cuisine at an upscale food court. It probably directly rivals with Saveur. Garçons comparatively lacks in presentation but it triumphs in taste and portions.
It's signature 12-hour Belly of Pork is definitely an eye opener. The pork was immensely tender but that crackling of the top brought me utter joy. The pork is served on a bed of fluffy creamy mash with a mesclun salad dressed with honey balsamic reduction. Délicieuse!
Excellent chicken wings from Two Wings!
When you first walk into the food court, you can observe people having these attractive golden coated wings and your stomach automatically reserves some space for those.
Once my order is up, I easily noticed that the wings are larger than the usual because of the size of birds they import. The size allows you to have that big firm juicy crunch as you sink your teeth into that wing.
What seals the deal is the chili. It's the chili one usually gets at those BBQ chicken wing stalls at the hawker centre. It goes soooo well with the fried batter. These babies go for 4 for $8.50, 6 for $12.50 and 12 for $24.
Maybe they should rename themselves as Four Wings? Because that's how many I would want to eat.
Located far in the recesses of the basement in Tangs is a little food market managed by Fei Siong Food Management. One of the most popular stalls there is Penang Yong Kee Char Kuey Tiao.
The noodle dish ($5/8) was extremely fragrant and tasty with the right amount of spice. The beansprouts were crunchy unlike other char kway teow outlets'. There were a lot of lard cubes which definitely brought out more flavour but gotta be cautious eating those. There is an inconsistency with the number of prawns they serve. (Some plates one, some two.) Overall, a really yummy dish. I'll probably drop by the York Hotel to compare!
