Located within a coffeeshop in Bedok Town Centre is Happy House Sichuan Kitchen Mala Hotpot, our go-to destination for value-for-money, no frills, consistent quality of Chinese stir fries. The 3 most ordered dishes for us will be in the order of 手撕包菜, 番茄炒鸡蛋 and 回锅肉. Can you actually believe that these dishes cost between $6-7 each?
The first is the stir fried cabbage with umami fish sauce and pieces of meat while the tomato egg is just comfort food maximus. The meat dish is twice-cooked pork belly with leeks and scallions. Each of these dishes are meant to go alongside a bowl of white rice.
As we usually order the same dishes, we know that their price was much cheaper!! $17 as compared to $25ish for our usual order - pork, lucheon meat, sausage, magiee and etc 🤡 The flavour was more salty than usual (but still within my acceptable range 🤡) Their xiao la was just nice for me!
Crispy, hot and numbing dry-fried chicken with dried chilli peppers and Sichuan peppercorn. Other than having lots of tiny bones in this plate of crispy chicken cubes, the rest of it was good. It was fragrant and spicy with numbing and tingling sensation 》$12
Since then, I went back several times and each time it’s always for their mala xiangguo. Recently, I stumbled upon a YouTube video by 聪生家SG Chengdu Family where both @_cecilia_chen_ and @szechuanese introduced the other stir fry dishes from this stall. That got me interested that if this stall is endorsed by Sichuan natives, their dishes will surely be authentic and worth a try.
From this meal, I can conclude that this stall is a hidden gem for damn good Chinese food from just the 3 dishes that I have tried such as the Sichuan Mala Chicken 辣子鸡, Fried Cabbage 手撕包菜 and Tomato & Egg Stir Fry 番茄炒蛋, all three perfect to go with a bowl of white rice. The fried chicken bits in the mala spices and dried chilli is spicy yet numbing, the perfect balance of a mala dish, while the fried cabbage is appetizing and savory that even some of us who do not take vegetables will accept this in their meal. Finally, the tomato egg stir fry is a classic comforting dish that will make it to every family’s table for each meal.

This stall goes by the price-per-portion system and the staff will pick the ingredients for you. Their vegetables / mushroom / steam mantou / instant noodles are charged at $1 per portion, pork / chicken at $2 per portion and beef / mutton / seafood at $3 per portion. They also carry a good selection of ingredients.
With the amount of food we ordered, I would say that their MXG is priced pretty affordably and reasonable. I ordered 中辣 and I find the spice quite manageable. The noodles came out rather salty so I recommend pairing them with a bowl of rice instead. This is probably a better alternative if you do not want to spend too much time queuing for the other popular MXG at Bedok interchange hawker 》$9
Ordered 中辣, and it turns out not as spicy as what I thought. Not as fragrant, and not as salty. Nevertheless, it’s a nice bowl of 麻辣香锅 with a decent price (not by weight).
