Xin Wah Kee is a casual Chinese restaurant with outlets in Velocity @ Novena Square and 100AM. I recommend Xin Wah Keeās Toman Fish Soup, Herbal Chicken Soup, Braised Pork Rice and Fried Prawn Paste Chicken. https://hungryghost.sg/xin-wah-kee/
Visited this place at the recommendation of a friend as we were craving for fish soup! Fish soup is always my number one comfort food šš»āāļø
We got the Toman Fish Soup ($6.80) and rice/meesua/beehoon (+$0.50). The fish soup here is slightly different from the clearer ones we usually have, itās much creamier and thicker and I really like it! Felt kinda like I was drinking steamboat soup haha, but a healthier/lighter version of it :)
Theyāre pretty generous with the fish slices, and the tofu in the soup goes super well with the flavourful soup! I actually finished the whole bowl of soup and
We also got some sides to share (chicken wings, prawn balls). They were quite mediocre though, probably ok to give it a miss.
Not the usual clear fish soup we get in hawker centres. The soup is quite thick and fragrant, with a few pieces of fish slices, some tofu, cabbage and tomato.
We got Fried Prawn Paste Chicken ($5.80) and Fried Prawn Roll ($5) to share. The portion for side dishes honestly looks sad and pathetic, definitely not worth the price paid, especially the chicken wings that barely had much meat left when we sank our teeth into it.
Would not recommend getting sides but the fish soup is still decent, although I still very much prefer fish soups at kopitam/hawker centres. š§
Very fresh fish with alot of vegs in the curry.
Will definitely come back again.
Unimpressed with the service here at Xin Wah Kee. They have a few choices of soups - toman fish or red grouper, or you could opt for the seafood options at the same price as the fish soup counterparts with more varieties of seafood and less fish slices.
I got the Toman Fish soup without any rice and noodles (+0.50 for rice, thick bee hoon, kuay tiao or mee sua). Originally wanted the set with you cai, but you canāt change the set as it comes with ngoh hiang. Bought the you cai separately instead which cost $2.80. The menu is quite inflexible, as I also wanted to get the chicken soup which they had advertised as a set with rice, veg and drinks. Unfortunately, you canāt order the chicken soup as an ala carte item so.. didnāt bother trying.
Tastewise, the fish soup is not bad. Itās got a milky white finish and is quite thick, slightly sweet and nourishing. Thereās no fishy smell, and the Toman fish slices have no bones, plus thereās quite a decent number of fish slices and large rectangles of silken tofu inside. Thereās a hint of shaoxing wine, with tomato and cabbage.
For the you cai, the vegetables were lightly poached which left them very crisp. However, the sauce was much sweeter than usual. Itād have been better if the sauce was less sweet and more savoury.
We also got two pieces of prawn roll/ngoh hiang, but they werenāt nice. The rolls werenāt served hot, and the portion size looked miserable. While the meat was tender, the roll left a powdery feeling when bitten into, with a strange aftertaste.
I doubt Iāll be visiting Xin Wah Kee again given the subpar service, sides and a mediocre fish soup. Thereās other places that Iād go for a fish soup craving, and other places that Iād rather spend my money and calories at in Velocity.
Decided to takeaway dinner yesterday because who knows when will be the next time I'm back in office (and my vouchers are expiring). 1 for 1 with UPOP mall points redemption for this Lu Rou Fan (original price $6.8 each + 30 cents for takeaway). But me and my dining companion don't love fatty meat, so this was a no no for us. I spent so much time separating the fats from the meat I was so tired after the meal. I prefer the Singapore style minced meat Lu Rou Fan instead! #velocity #novenasquare #upopmall #luroufan #xinwahkee #favepay #favepaysg #burpple #burpplesg #takeawayfood #takeawaysg #food #foodiesg #sgfoodie #whati8today #8dayseat #vscofoodie #iweeklyfood #foodporn #foodstagram #vscofood #foodphotography #sgmakan #sgmakandiary #sgfoodstagram #singaporeeats #exploresingaporeeats #exploresg #whatsgoodhere #sgfoodi
