🍞 Purple Potato Yam Mochi Tarik
📍Swee Heng 1989 Classic (@classic1989sg)
📌 Multiple Outlets
💰 $2.50
The 1989 Classic Mochi Bread Reviews have finally been complete! After who knows how many months, I finally got around to trying the third of Swee Heng 1989 Classic's iconic mochi breads, the Purple Potato Yam Mochi Tarik.
I've had the purple potato + yam combination before and honestly, I don't find it to be anything to shout about, given how the sweet and earthy flavours of the potato and yam blend into each other and taste like a unanimous sweet paste. The same applies for this bun, with its sweet purple filling not having a distinct taste of either purple potato or yam, but it's still a great bun nonetheless. The chewy, stretchy mochi makes this bun a lot more texturally interesting!
Of the 3 mochi buns part of this mochi bun series, I think the Chocolate Mochi Tarik is still my favourite. This one is definitely worth a try too for its pretty colours and sweet fillings!

Bought this $3.00 snack for afternoon tea and it was able to fulfil my tummy. Had it consumed straight from the refrigerator. It was great!
I personally feel that Swee Heng's standard has improved over the years. Some months back, my colleague bought a black forest cake which was yummlicious. Just last week, I bought the chocolate almond croissant. Was pleasantly surprised as I didnt remember it to be so crispy as a croissant and it definitely surpassed Four Leaves for this bread.
Will be keeping my eyes peered for more goodies from this bakery.
The cake in this roll is those really dense and kinda heavy kinds, making it a lot more filling. I really liked the pandan cake and the coconut flakes on top gave it a bit of added crunch / chew. However I found the inner layer (I think it's gula melaka flavoured apparently??) Kinda odd tbh. The cream inside tasted like red dates, which I'm not really a big fan of, so the cake immediately got kinda jelak for me. If you like red dates though, you probably wont mind it that much.
The very first garlic cream cheese bun I ever had was from Classic 1989 last year before I started this account! I remember being surprised at how good cream cheese tasted LOL anyways finally tried it again after over a year and my sentiments on it remain the same.
The amount of cream cheese that is in the bun is suuuuper generous, much better than other bakeries I've tried! Each wedge has a generous coating of sweet, creamy cream cheese. This is definitely the stand-out of the bun.
The bread used is those hard, baguette kinds, making it a bit hard to tear and chew if you dont toast it, which is a downside. The amount of garlic butter also isn't that much, such that it tastes more like a cream cheese baguette than actual garlic bread. Would be a lot better if the bread was coated with more garlic butter so that there's more garlic taste (could also be a batch issue from when I bought it though).
For only $2.50, this is super worth it! Would be even better if real garlic and a more generous amount of garlic butter was added. Can't wait to try other gcc buns from other bakeries too to see how it compares!
