Since I discovered āonigiriā on my first trip to Tokyo decades ago, I have always had a soft spot for the handy bites.
Picked this up from Samurice takeaway counter at Wisma Atria today and found it really satisfying. The Japanese rice was packed with tiny crispy young sardines and enlivened with bits of ume (plum).
I have a feeling this is a popular variant here as there was only one piece of it left on the shelf.
Tender salmon and fluffy rice, but the portion was a little small and there wasnāt enough sauce. I could do without the okra. But overall it was a satisfying meal apart from the fact Iām still hungry. ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Honestly, I wasn't expecting much because I had bought this for breakfast the next day (refrigerated of course). So, I was really impressed how fluffy the rice had managed to remain overnight- it wasn't dry or stale tasting at all! The amount of mentaiko was also more than generous. Besides the considerable sized dollop on the edge of the riceroll, there was a good serving packed inside too! I'd love to give the other flavours a try the next time I'm around. I imagine a few would make for a night, light lunch.
Slipped disc or not, I am always on the lookout for interesting food to eat. So whilst at Wisma Atria today for my therapy session at the chiropractor, I spotted Samurice, a new onigiri takeaway counter in the basement. Bought three flavours to try: ikura ($5), cooked salmon flakes with sea salt and mentaiko ($3 each).
As usual, anything with mentaiko doesn't disappoint but I enjoyed the ikura one most - sure, it's pricier but there's a lot of fish roe packed into the triangle of rice. And although I didn't mind the salmon flakes, it might be a tad strong for those who are sensitive to the fishiness of cooked salmon.
My daughter, who really loves onigiri (Japanese rice ball), could not help but give this new stall at Wisma Atria a second look.

Samurice carefully selects ingredients, such as rice, seaweed and salt, from Japan. The rice, which comes from Niigata, Hokkaido and Akita, was indeed delicious. My favourite was the one with beef, which was priced higher at $5. The others we tried were roasted salmon, teriyaki salmon, tuna mayo and salmon wakame seaweed, all priced at $3 each.

What was a little disappointing was that the seaweed was soggy. It should have been sealed separately from the rice to keep it crisp.
