There has been a handful of openings around the Maxwell neighbourhood of the late — whilst the area around Erskine Road hasn’t been seeing as much activity in the local F&B scene as compared to the rest of the area surrounding it, a few new F&B establishments have just moved into the area. One of such establishments would be that of Oat & About — these folks are located at the same stretch of shophouses where one can find other establishments such as that of Mr Kneady’s as well as La Grigne Patisserie. For those whom have it heard of the brand before, Oat & About had previously operated as an online-based business; this would be their very first time operating as a brick-and-mortar store. Occupying a small-sized shop space that is of the usual size of all the units situated there, Oat & About is primarily set up as a takeaway space; the space being decked in vibrant colours of orange and white that is pretty eye-catching. Being an establishment that primarily focuses on their handcrafted oat milk ice-cream, it is worth noting that Oat & About claims themselves to be the first Oat Milk Ice Cream shop in Singapore — all ice-cream flavours at Oat & About being churned with oat milk. Their oat milk ice-creams are all served in cups, with patrons having the choice of going for either a single scoop or a double scoop.
One thing worth noting about the single and double cups at Oat & About is how their ice-cream cups all comes accompanied with their Signature Cone Chips. Just like how one would expect from some gelato shops around the island, the Oat Milk Ice-Cream is layered into the cups layer by layer — all the way till the ice-cream is filled to the brim of the cup; the Oat Milk ice-cream is then topped with the Signature Cone Chip that gives their ice-cream a different aesthetic from those served at other locations. Skimming through the selection of oat milk ice-creams that they have to offer during the day we made our visit to Oat & About, we eventually found ourselves opting for the Double Cup consisting of the Girl Scout Mint Cookies and the Kurogoma Oat Milk Ice-Cream. The more unique flavour between the two (2) would be the Girl Scout Mint Cookies; described to come with elements such as mint oat milk ice-cream, dark chocolate chips and Oreo cookies. Whilst sounding like a flavour that is rather close to that of Cookies & Cream on paper, the Girl Scout Mint Cookies does come with a slight twist where there is also some semblance to that of a cookie dough-flavoured ice-cream; likely stemming from the use of oat milk for the base here. The Oreo cookies crumbs surprisingly gives a soft bite, while the inclusion of chocolate chips provide a slightly sweet crunch in between all of that; the notes of mint didn’t feel particularly artificial as well, providing a refreshing and cooling sensation at the back of tongue.
Meanwhile, the Kurogoma flavour is described as a flavour that is “100% Roasted Black Sesame Oat Milk Ice-Cream”; we were surprised by how rich of black sesame this flavour was considering how we were expecting the oat milk would have interfered with it anyway — but there was none of that with its pretty roasty notes that one would expect out of black sesame. The Signature Cone Chip was pretty much like wafer chips that came with a slightly roasty aroma of sesame that was a great add-on to their oat milk ice-cream; adds an element of crispness aside from the aesthetic factor. If there is anything about the oat milk ice-cream at Oat & About, we did note that the ice-creams here tend to melt faster than that of usual ice-cream / gelato / sorbets from other establishments; perhaps the main cause being the oat milk base used for their ice-cream; portions sizes are also less generous when compared against usual ice-cream / gelato parlours — understandably so considering the higher costs in production against its price point that is comparable with other ice-cream / gelato parlours and also the consistency of their oat milk ice-cream that would not quite shape well either. Still, it is interesting to see a concept like Oat & About being all big on oat milk and showing the possibilities of how oat milk can be used in the making of ice-cream to the masses — a spot worth checking out for those curious on how oat milk ice-creams would be like.
