Whilst the closure of Golden Mile Complex has brought around the opening of many new Thai F&B establishments across the island that were displaced as a result of the sale of the building, there is also an ongoing trend where Thai eateries are also sprouting up all across the island. Nummun Thai Kitchen is a name that is likely to ring some bells here — the eatery is perhaps one of the best kept secrets around the Upper Thomson Road area, with its most popular dish being its Crab Meat Omelette that is highly sought after amongst foodies that had been patronising the restaurant. Operating within its premises at Thomson Imperial Court since 2020, Nummun Thai Kitchen was a spot that we had always wanted to give a visit — this also explains our excitement when we had found out that Nummun Thai Kitchen has opened a second outlet at Blk 103 Yishun Ring Road recently within the estate that most would recognise as Chong Pang City. Much like their original outlet at Thomson Imperial Court, their outlet at Chong Pang City is also a standalone eatery — that being said, the Chong Pang City outlet is significantly smaller than their first location. The interior decor of its Chong Pang City outlet follows closely to that of their first store at Thomson Imperial Court; the design being more function over form with dining furniture featuring metallic accents much like how it would be in an actual Thai eatery; nothing particularly fancy save for some interesting light fittings and pictures of their food adorning the walls. The menu at Nummun Thai Kitchen’s outlet at Chong Pang City follows closely to what Nummun Thai Kitchen serves up at Thomson Imperial Court — the menu is being sectioned into various categories including sections dedicated to appetisers, salads, soups, meats, seafoods, vegetable and eggs, rice and noodles, and desserts. Drinks available at Nummun Thai Kitchen includes a list of rather familiar Thai beverages such as that of Thai Iced Milk Tea / Coffee and Iced Lemongrass which is easily found at other Thai eateries, though there is also a range of bottled beverages as well as bottled beer for those who wish to go for something alcoholic.

It is needless to say that we had made our visit to Nummun Thai Kitchen to give the widely-raved Crab Meat Omelette a go; that being said, it does seem that Nummun Thai Kitchen does serve up other rather stellar dishes that we would actually return for which makes the already-good Crab Meat Omelette more of a crowd-pleaser. Case-in-point would be the Pig Trotter w/ Rice — we were so glad that we did ended up going for this dish considering how it is executed over here, though we nearly gave this dish a miss considering how we aren’t quite fans of braised pig trotters to begin with, and that we are usually more keen on giving items such as the Thai Basil Pork Rice with Egg and Pad Thai a go instead. An item that requires some waiting time to be served up, we were told by the wait staff that the Pig Trotter w/ Rice would take approximately 15 minutes waiting time for it to be served; we were keen to believe that they actually meant an additional 15 minutes on top of the other dishes though.

On first look, the Pig Trotter w/ Rice comes with a braised egg, de-boned pig trotter meat and a portion of rice served on a plate — laid beneath the pig trotted would be some leafy greens that helped to provide a visual pop with the contrast of colours. Digging into the pig trotter, the pig trotter is wonderfully braised – each slab of meat came well-flavoured with a deep, earthy and savoury note that is absolutely flavoursome without being overly salty. The meat also carried no undesirable porky stench, while the meat itself was immensely tender and melt-in-the-mouth; at times also being pretty gelatinous without being too fatty or jelat. The inclusion of coriander helps to add a distinct note that cuts through the savouriness and meatiness further, giving the dish a flavoural contrast. Whilst the rice that accompanies the dish looks deceptively plain, it does seem that there is quite a bit of braising liquid that is being absorbed by the grains at the bottom; itself carrying a light savoury note with a slight herbal note that antes up the flavour of the rice and the braising liquid drenched above the rice. This also meant that the rice was absolutely easy to have even on its own; nothing too dry not overly drenched in gravy. For those who like to tickle their tastebuds with a bit of spiciness, the chili dip that accompanies the dish is one that should not be missed; the tangy and zippy chili dip is possibly one of the most complex with its flavour profile — seemingly contains a few aromatics as well, yet fits just right in terms of spiciness for those who are able tolerate moderate levels of heat. Enough to provide the level of spiciness to tantalise the tastebuds, whilst not unnecessarily overwhelming the dish in spiciness.

Most folks whom have had visited Nummun Thai Kitchen are likely to recommend the Crab Meat Omelette; that being said, Nummun Thai Kitchen does seem to serve up very good Thai fare that is more than just their Crab Meat Omelette for those whom are willing to explore them a little further — apart from the Pig Trotter w/ Rice, we also had their Tom Yum Seafood Soup (Clear), which was yet another dish that we were impressed by. Whilst most clear Tom Yum soups tend to be a little more straight-up overwhelmingly spicy, the Tom Yum Seafood Soup (Clear) at Nummun Thai Kitchen was a good balance of being tangy and spicy — the level of spiciness being just about right for those whom are tolerable to moderate levels of spiciness without causing one to break into much of a sweat; the Tom Yum Seafood Soup (Clear) also coming with squid, fish, prawns and mushrooms. For those whom are curious about Nummun Thai Kitchen’s Crab Meat Omelette, the Crab Meat Omelette is done in a style similar to that of 1 Michelin Star Raan Jay Fai in Bangkok, Thailand; a fluffy omelette that is massively filled with huge chunks of crab meat within — the omelette was not particularly greasy, all that whilst the crab meat came a good bite and a natural sweetness that really complimented the egg. This is also not forgetting how they are pretty generous with the portion of crab meat as well; coming with two different chili dips, one would be the same tangy and zippy chili dip that came with the Pork Trotter w/ Rice, while a sweet chili sauce also accompanied the Crab Meat Omelette — both worked well with the dish. Service was great at Nummun Thai Kitchen as well — the front-of-house crew mainly comprises of young Thai ladies whom are especially courteous and eager to serve their patrons well; they are also especially systematic with crowd management as well. Whilst we have not been to Nummun Thai Kitchen’s first store at Thomson Imperial Court, we do find our experience at Nummun Thai Kitchen especially pleasant — the food and service being authentically Thai; a spot that is truly worth making a trip down for. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Nummun Thai Kitchen on the opening of their new outlet, and wishing them all the best in what is to come!
