More Reviews of good food at Nasi Lemak Kukus

It used to be a self-help concept to select from their wide variety of items, and a 1-time serving of their infamous steamed (kukus) coconut rice of any amount.
We loved their variety which tasted good, especially the rice which was significantly fragrant and well-cooked.
Never visited them since they relocated from 2nd to now, their 3rd venue. Was disappointed that they’re operating like just another stall, with set meal and limited options for top-up.
They have lost the touch in their steamed rice. Fried chicken wing and fish were crispy but just decent. Notably, the mutton Rendang was delicious, but it wasn’t going to be enough to draw us back again to the ulu location in the industrial area. Really a shame b’cos we used to remember them for their brighter days.

When my bro and SIL was back in town, they craved Nasi lemak and I thought of trying Nasi lemak kukus that I’ve always wanted to. However they are no longer along selegie, but in Toa Payoh industrial estate 1002 now. I googled again and again before going down to make sure it was right. 🍴
.
The Nasi lemak was quite the bomb! $4 for a set with a choice of salted egg wings/ normal. Though it was a pity that the salted egg was oos when I was there. Normal wings batter was pretty legit though. Rice is actually steamed rather than cooked to retain the coconut milk aroma! There’s coconut milk aroma all the way to the last bite. The sambal was amazing that we had to get extras.

And while you are at it, definitely order the fried chicken skin at a dollar. You will not regret it. 🍴
.
Mutton rendang($4) was pretty tender though not my favorite dish. Would have still preferred beef.

Yes, there’s really FREE FLOW rice and sambal chilli, which are two essentials in what sets a great nasi lemak apart from a mediocre one. They definitely didn’t scrimp on the coconut rice and sambal chilli as the fragrance from the coconut rice cooked in pandan leaves will instantly hit you as you open the rice cooker while the spicy sambal chilli might seemed unassuming initially but wait for 5 minutes and the spiciness will slowly reveal its fiery nature and cause a slow burn around your lips.

Don’t come here and expect a wide array of ingredients because there’s not; but I feel the variety is more than enough for one to customize their own plate of nasi lemak. Right at the counter, the shop owners have laid out everything from the regular ikan bilis with peanut, hotdogs, otah to the less unconventional ones like fried chicken skin. Flavours will not knock you off the perch but it’s the familiarity and distinctive homecooked taste that will make you keep going back for more. Special mention goes to their deep fried chicken wings which brought back memories of how my grandmother would used to make and the plain generic egg that most take for granted but here, extra effort is put into adding corns and carrot bits into the egg mixture before frying them up, resulting in a crunchy texture.

Jumping on the bandwagon a little too late but well, thankfully I did make my visit now that I am always in the area.

I really like how they feel like a Kampong eatery with that open air kitchen at the back and the garden seating behind; there isn’t somewhere that carries the same exact vibes that Nasi Lemak Kukus has. While there is a default Chicken Wing combo to get, the whole point of being here is to help yourselves to the food; the free-flow rice and the condiments with a price list to refer to. Admittedly, there is not much to really hype about the condiments (though the rendang is recommended and is something I have yet to try) — the Chicken Wing was pedestrian, and the Otah Fish Cake was nothing out of the ordinary (but again, what would one expect out of that?). The only condiment worth mentioning that we had on our plate was the fried chicken skin; absolutely crisp and umami — costs $1 for 4 pieces but we could certainly do with more if they were not that pricey. The highlight has to be the rice and the chili — the rice so light, so moist and so fluffy with that evident aroma of coconut that just goes through and through; so much that we have to resist ourselves from getting another serving of rice. The chili was also stellar; they carry two versions — a sweet variant and a spicy variant. While the spicy carries a lot of kick, my heart lies with the sweet one here; it’s distinctively sweet but not overly so, well rounded off without a lingering aftertaste. Wouldn’t mind going for it again!

It’s mix and match, coconut-loaded fried stuff galore! The fragrance of their steamed coconut rice greets you the moment you set foot in this joint. I loved that you’re allowed to pick your own ingredients and how much you’d like to pile on your plate.
Friends introduced me to their ‘Ayam Masak Merah’; slow braised Spicy Tomato Chicken, which was fork tender and I absolutely love the sauce on their coconut rice. Food is on the slightly pricier side, but definitely tasty and authentic.
Oh yes! Did I mention, free flow Coconut Rice?

Approx 7bucks for everything above.

Nasi lemak fans, look no further! This self-service eatery allows you to create your own nasi lemak ingredients from a delectable spread of the usual suspects (fried chicken wing, fried fish, ikan billis etc) and other ‘premium’ items like curry dishes. What you pay depends on the items that you pick.

I chose the ikan kuning, otah, omelette and sayur lodeh to go with the rice, which was softer than usual (in a good way) as it is steamed instead of boiled. The texture was really yummy and addictive. With my iced tea, the total bill was only $7!

Oh, and did I mention that the rice and sambal are free flow?

It’s great to be able to decide swiftly on what to eat and even better when the right choice is made. @NasiLemakKukus is a hipsterish eatery serving up traditional nasi lemak amidst dangly lights strewn across the ceiling and giving that primary school canteen vibe except that you won’t find a buffet of fried food goodness ready for your picking. Aside from the nasi lemak set comprising a chicken wing, small fried fish (ikan kuning), egg omelette wedge and a scoop of ikan bilis, there are many other choice of ingredients that one would only be too tempted to pick. I couldn’t help piling the superbly crispy fried chicken skin (+$1 for 4pcs) and ordering a cup of rose syrup (+$1.20) to complete my road to fat-dom. What’s even more remarkable is the freeflow coconut rice that’s steamed the traditional way and the 2 types of sambal that had me returning to the counter for a 2nd dose.

This is the default destination for many when the craving for Malay-style nasi lemak hits. Obviously the big draw here is the all-you-can-eat fragrant, rich rice. That, and the two kinds of freeflow sambal because the world made up of two kinds of people - those whose tastebuds adore the sweet and those who swear by the savoury. I am firmly in the latter’s camp (Nasi Lemak Kukus’ version is wonderfully fiery so proceed with caution).
What’s cool is this place operates on a self-service model for the add-on’s and dishes (at least that’s what I experienced today). Apart from the basics like crunchy peanuts with ikan bilis, chicken wing, ikan kuning and cucumber, the other half of the displayed food is made up of hot dishes in pots. Here is where calorie counters explode. Lemak-till-can-die sayur lodeh, beef rendang, stewed beef lungs and other spicy chicken dishes wink at you cheekily, daring to be scooped up and ravished. I managed to resist them this afternoon but I doubt if that’s going to be possible on my next visit.

Diet? Not today, especially when I was told that there are TAKE-ALL-YOU-CAN steamed coconut rice and sambal/sweet chilli at Nasi Lemak Kukus. 😍

How to order? Pick up a styrofoam plate for dining in or styrofoam box for takeaway. Feel free to pile on the fluffy rice then take your own dishes. Prices are stated by per piece or per scoop. Finally, proudly present your overcrowded plate to the cashier who will do the calculation for you. 😎

I was overwhelmed by the variety and had to walk up and down to finally decide what dishes to pick. Well, partly because the styrofoam plate was too small for our big appetites. Be awed because these two super-filling plates of Nasi Lemak only cost about $7 and $8!

This is THE place where you can get your nasi lemak customisable with side dishes like lodeh, rendang, curry and wide selection of ala-carte items like chicken seaweed, omelette, chicken wings, otah, hotdog, fish, etc ($0.70-$2).

Really love their chillax ambiance and concept. The rice was fragrance and they have two types of sambal that you can choose from. I opt for the normal one but it was too salty to my liking. Maybe it was just my unlucky day?

Definitely coming back here again if I'm around the area but if I'm really craving for a good plate of classic nasi lemak, I'll give this place a miss and drive myself to Changi instead.

But hey............ FREE FLOW of rice and sambal so I guess no complaints though 😝

Price: $4 onwards

w/ chicken wing, peanuts & ikan bilis, cucumber, sambal, sayur lodeh, and mutton rendang

Awesome place to have nasi lemak kukus, awesome food choices, very casual set-up & very friendly staff !

Self service nasi lemak concept. U can choose between a standard set of nasi lemak($4) or Ala-Carte which u can choose anything u want from the countertop. The spicy sambal was good. A good nasi lemak comes with good sambal👍🏼

Kukus means the rice is steamed, not boiled. According to what I read, this makes the rice softer and helps it to absorb the coconut milk better, resulting in a fragrant, flavorful rice that is not mushy and lumpy. Unlimited servings of rice for the really hungry people by the way.
I usually avoid lamb due to the smell and gamey taste, but this lamb rendang was the exact opposite of that, together with a very shiok rendang gravy. The sambal, available in both sweet and spicy versions will cater to those who can and cannot take spice.
Excellent food, very affordable, and great atmosphere with an al fresco area at the back, for a more rustic feel. Make your way there if you are around Selegie!

life can be simple. only insist on freshly fried chicken wings, signature uber fragrant coconut rice that is steam not water cooked (free flow ftw) and a gallon of their sweet sweet sambal chili. see, simple.

today is the first tuesday of the month and the kind folks are paying it forward. just tip them at the end of your orders and the money will be donated to charity. Sweet!

I love the fluffy coconut flavored rice, Rendang that screams tender loving care and the amazing sweet chili sauce. This is the only place that I'll cave for a second serving of rice! Come here if you want to be delighted!

Super good and will definitely return again! Would do without the prawns the next time round though (expensive!) 😔😔 This is halal btw! And imo - I think one of the nicer halal food around my workplace 😂😂 #burpple #nasilemak #nasilemakkukus

The traditional steamed coconut rice here is tremendously fragrant and is FREE FLOW with any set or ingredients you choose. The winning combo of the rice with their two lip-smacking sambals (sweet and spicy) is so insanely satisfying, it almost doesn't matter what you get it with.

Saw Dixon's post and here I am! Still as good as it was at upper Thomson! Yummy!! Had 2 servings of the grainy and fragrant rice with lots of sweet sambal chilli! No regrets for the carbo overload! Simply worth it!
