This was an unexpected order as we needed to have another item to fill up our tummies. However, what came unassuming let us very impressed with the flavours and aroma. Cubes of carrot cake were evenly coated with the mild spicy XO sauce and sprinkled with crushed peanuts. A dish that doesn't warrant much attention but sure packs a mean punch. Never underestimate food that's black and ugly, it might just turn out to be one of the tastiest.
Never one to rest on its laurels, another of Mouth Restaurant's signatures is the iconic Squid Ink Char Siew Bao. Even though there is not a single hint of the squid ink flavour, it adds a distinctive colour against the bright red char siew. Overall, an acceptable dim sum dish that has more novelty than wows.
One of the must-order signature items at Mouth Restaurant are the irresistible salted egg yolk buns. With a crust that's soft like polo buns and inside containing salted egg molten, it totally screams of indulgence and decadence. Might be a tad expensive at $5.80 for 3 buns, it's totally worth it as you bite into one of them. Think of it as Tim Ho Wan's famous char siew buns with piping hot flowing salted egg.
Custard filling flows like volcano eruption but but but but but SWEET LIKE HELL • I can't take it sia! •
This 26-year old Cantonese institution’s baked liu sha bao ($5.80 for three) needs no introduction. The slightly sweet, crusted buns are perfectly executed: each has a crackly top, and a fluffy interior. To take things up a notch, the molten salted egg yolk filling really oozes out as you sink your teeth into these babies. Now this is what dreams are made of.
Super huge fan of squid ink anything - even though most of the time they don't taste like much - cause they look so impressive and interesting. These black little mounds of squid ink char siew buns had a great soft and fluffy exterior, coupled with a light smokey fragrance. While the meat's tender and lean, it's a pity the sauce was too starchy and coagulated into little lumps. Still, for that fluffy bun dough and pretty black exterior, I'd order it again.
