Soon Kueh skin was quite chewy, but the filling wasn't anything special!

Flavour was decent, there's q a strong black pepper taste, but didn't like that it was really mushy and "nua". Would prefer it to be QQ and Springy with a firm bite!

Found their glutinous rice a bit too sticky and oily. Perhaps go for their porridge instead, saw that it was quite popular.

Wasnโ€™t a big fan of this unfortunately. Had generous bits of mushrooms, but their abacus seeds were a tad too soft and lacked more of a chew.

Located in shun fu hawker centre, this stall has been selling hakka food for as long as i remember. Queues are still long but service is quick. The sun kueh and the yam porridge are my fav as it kick starts the day with a hearty meal.

One of the most reliable places to get a thin- skinned shun kueh with a flavourful interior of turnips , black fungus and dried shrimps.

Pair it with their homemade chilli for a perfect breakfast treat .

I say skip the yam cake ( too much flour and too Little of the real stuff )and the yam abacus seeds and / or the glutinous rice ( too greasy and mushy ) and just get the soon kuehs .

Opened only till early afternoon, Mei Zhen sees a constant queue forming for their Hakka delicacies. The first time I came I had the yam abacus which I felt was only average.

This time the ๅ››้ฆ™้‡‘ๅŽ็Œช่‚ ็ฒ‰, Chee cheong fun with toppings, caught my attention as I wanted to find out what toppings they had to offer. It felt like I was eating glutinous rice but the cheong fun version as the toppings were the ones that are usually found with glutinous rice; mushrooms, spring onions, dried shrimps and fried shallots. Surprisingly this savoury cheong fun was quite tasty, with such earthy umami flavours, and especially the fried shallots that were so fragrant and crispy! A mixture of sweet and soy sauce here was the watery type as compared to the usual thick liquid ones, but you should try it together with the chili sauce that adds a kick.

I love the food here because the quantity of crispy fried onions added. My favourite from mei zhen is the porridge. If its your first time there, try their signature shun kueh together with the chilli sauce. You can have good food and be health conscious simultaneously.

Hakka Soon Ban

The hakkas call their soon kueh equivalent soon ban.

I have been patronising this stall since the beginning of times. Granted that the soon kueh is still good but standards have fallen a far cry from how they were like .

The soon ban skins used to be purplish with a good ham aroma however these days they are more whitish in colour and lacked any yam aroma . Perhaps yam is no longer used ๐Ÿ˜ต. This then makes it less authentic and more commercialised .

Other than the soon ban, their homemade porridge with chopped mushrooms, crispy peanuts and black fungus is excellent too ( probably the best thing in the shop now ).

I would say donโ€™t bother ordering the yam abacus seeds, yam cake or glutinous rice because those are really not on par. Yam abacus seeds are too slimy and greasy ( without a good chewy bite ) and similarly like the yam cake - they both lack in yam content. The glutinous rice is also pretty greasy and clumpy .

So stick to the soon ban and the porridge ๐Ÿ˜Š

Mei Zhen Hakka Delicacies

CCF and yam cake (this is not bad)

Hakka style soon kueh

These in my opinion are the best tasting soon kuehs in Singapore .

For those of you who are not thick skinned ( ha ha ! ) lovers , this thin skinned soon kueh made will yam will sit very well with you .

Each soon kueh is packed with turnips, mushrooms , black fungus and dried shrimps creating this harmoniously good combination.

Skip the yam cake , yam abacus seeds and the chee cheong fun because these are not worth queuing .

Just dive straight to these soon kuehs and be sure to buy a box of 6 because 1 is never enough.
