Hidden 💎 Gems Of Chinatown Complex Food Centre
Underdog #4
Kim’s cafe
Smooth Long black
Deterred by the Long queue at 50 times coffee stall ( wu shi nian dai), I decided to get a quick caffeine shake up at Lim’s cafe to complement my Tau sar pau from Yeap seng pau shop .
The coffee beans are freshly grounded .
Very smooth and excellent cup of long black in the most unexpected of all places 😊

I love walking around Chinatown complex market because once in a while, you find a jewel .
My recent haunt is yuan Lang Soy Sauce chicken / Hk style wanton mee at Chinatown complex ( see my earlier post ) .
The latest jewel I have discovered is this Indonesia nasi Padang stall . The food is sooooooooooooo good and so flavourful - the cooking is really from the heart .
Different from the usual nasi Padang stalls because this stall specialises in Indonesian type nasi Padang . The Assam fish was such a killer and so was the black sweet soy sauce chicken and the sayur lodeh.
The Chef is nowhere other than from Indonesia , Surabaya - so what you get is true authentic home style Indonesian cooking .
A set of Assam fish ( and a huge piece ) and a side of vegetables ( your choice ) is only 5 dollars - can you imagine ? ?
Ask for a huge dallop of her homemade sambal because it bursts with so much flavour and very very spicy too .
Much much much better in taste and quality and value than the famed nasi Padang along Kiliney road .
Try and see if you’d agree with me 😊
Best to go in a group so that you can order a variety of dishes to share .
Stop by to chat with mama fita because she’s so friendly and nice to speak with 😊

Starting my series on the hidden treasures within Chinatown food complex centre ....
For those of you who have been putting up with the inconsistencies of the peanut soup ah balling stall at golden mile Hawker ( you know which one ...) , you don’t have to anymore ....😝
I have been visiting this dear dessert stall at Chinatown complex for some time and standards are always consistent . The peanut soup dessert is so generously filled with well stewed peanuts and the dessert has been sweetened just right - not too sweet at all ( and that’s really a challenge !)
The peanut soup is so robust with a milky peanut flavour . The stall serves ah ballings too and I must say that their peanut ah ballings are really lovely - with a skin less thick than the ones at Golden Mile Hawker and with a much better texture.
They make pretty good red bean soups , green bean soups and Tau Suan as well. Portions are huge and prices are approximately 1.20 to 1.30.
Just don’t order the Orh nee, it didn’t sit well with my palette because it seemed that some sort of Essence was added in to give a weird deep purple colour . For Orh nee - read my post on the dessert stall at hong Lim - that one’s a winner .
Yuan Lang Soy sauce chicken master

Continuing my series on the hidden treasures in Chinatown complex food centre .....
While others are happily queuing for the Michelin Star Soy sauce chicken , my joy comes from finding the true hidden gem .
Intrigued with the signboard - “ Soy sauce chicken master “ - they better be good to live up to that name .
I was about get the Soy sauce chicken noodles but saw the uncle before me with what I thought looked like a delicious plate of Hk style wanton noodles .
And boy did I squeal with delight upon my first taste of the noodles. The wanton noodles tasted as good as they looked . Served with 4 very plum wantons filled with fresh and juicy prawns and a perfect Hk style noodle that is cooked to perfection , has the right bite without the alkaline taste and smell and a delectable kai lan ( instead of the usual cai Xin ) - this was like heaven on earth for me .
This , in my opinion was so many times better that what you would get in the Hk chain of restaurants in Singapore ( you know where... the jade .. and the treasures 😝).
The chilli was the next thing that elevated this whole dish - fiery spicy ; it went brilliantly well with the noodles that were lightly seasoned
. A very clean tasting plate of Hk style wanton noodles as compared to the ones that are drenched in msg - laden sauce .
Exactly the way I would like my wanton noodles .
A challenge to find this stall as they are hidden at the back ( just next to the infamous duo ji chee cheong fun which has been there from the beginning of times ). Kudos to you if you manage to find it 👧🏻
This is undoubtedly one of the hidden treasures in Chinatown complex food centre .
And did I mention this plate of heaven was only 3.50 ?
Do give this a try and see if you concur with me :)
Will be back to try their soy sauce kampong chicken which looks so succulent and delicious 🤤
