Japanese Flavours
.
Iberico Pork Jowl Charshu Don (Lunch Set $17) was OUTSTANDING - Tender, succulent slices of pork jowls slow-cooked to perfection and topped with an addictive savoury-sweet sauce, while the onsen egg hidden at the side of the bed of fluffy rice makes for a delicate, but most welcome addition. The meat has a good ratio of fats in each bite.
.
It is honestly quite rare to find gyudon with on-point taste and satisfaction, but the gyudon served here was excellent. Gyu Don ($14) - Fragrant, tender, and perfectly seasoned shabu beef slices with caramelised onion on a bed of fluffy Japanese rice. Mix the egg in and you have a delightful scrumptious dish that brings glee to your tastebuds!
.
Traditional Izakaya with great quality, and very value for money lunch sets. Each set comes with complimentary salad (our fav are the seaweed and fried brinjal) that's sure to make you fall into an instant food coma after lunch! So do not be deceived by the sizes of each lunch bowl, they are damn filling, we swear!

For a portion of Salmon Belly Kanayaki Don ($6.90), you get a juicy fatty belly that melts in your mouth, plus the savoury taste of the teriyaki sauce. People who don't like raw stuff have no reason to refuse this scrumptious bowl!

We visited Man Man’s little quaint branch along Keong Saik, boasting soft unagi seasoned to perfection, comforting on the inside with thin skin on the outside, grilled to a crisp! For those with don't like the fishy, slimy and muddy taste of eel, Man Man will change your mind!!
.
We ordered the Large Hitsumabushi ($35.80+), a portion good enough for two! With a slight smoky fragrance, soft meat, and slightly charred skin, you can eat the dish on its own, or with negi and wasabi or daishi stock (swipe ➡️for more pics!). The spicy sweet sauce at the side had a hint of ginger, our favourite among the three. The light bonito fragrance from the daishi stock lents a warm and comforting touch to the meal.
.
Great unagi, great ambience, and definitely a dining experience to remember.

Jo's Buta Shogayaki Don ($11.90) boasted a very generous serving of tender pork strips stir fried in soy sauce, sake, mirin, along with ginger and onion. There were still a few slices left even at the last spoonful of rice! Scrumptious, savoury and highly addictive when paired with the warm fluffy rice as a donburi. Break the onsen egg for a creamy addition to the delicious dish!
.
Doug had their Garlic Tonkotsu with all toppings ($15.90), and opted for the hard noodles and strong soup. Out it came piping hot with a dash of dark garlic oil, topped with black fungus, tender caramelised aburi belly chashu, and a large slab of chashu that spanned the diameter of the bowl (tastes decent but not quite as satisfying as the aburi belly). With strong flavours of Japanese shio, the rich and creamy soup was fragrant with a smooth velvety finish like melted butter.
.
Ramen Hitoyoshi also offers a free flow of beansprouts and sweet corn. The fresh beansprouts are seasoned in chili oil and sesame seeds, refreshing on the side!

First started out as an online grocer for fresh sashimi-grade fish, Soshinsen is both a restaurant and wholesaler of fresh air flown fish from Japan.
.
The sashimi was fresh, both Salmon ($5.80) and Salmon Belly ($7.80), not too fishy, and came with generous thick slices. Chawanmushi ($4) was of a reasonable standard and the Salmon Oyaku Don ($16.80) was pretty decent. We also tried the Gyudon ($14.80) which was served with generous portion of beef. For maximum enjoyment be sure to mix the onsen egg consistently around the entire bowl.
.
The Salmon Mentai Nigiri ($2) was good too! Thick slices of salmon and torched salmon tartar lies atop fluffy sushi rice. What impressed us was the Aburi Salmon Maki ($10.80) - blowtorched to perfection with a strong smoky flavour! The mayo and salmon exuded such peaty aroma that each mouthful felt fresh off the grill. The avocado mixed well with the soft half-grilled salmon and warm rice, made for a party in the mouth.
.
Lastly, the Yuzu Cider ($5.90) was a pleasant alcohol-free refresher rich in yuzu aroma with a mild sweetness, while delivering a fresh and clear aftertaste.
.
Definitely worth a visit if you’re at Hougang Mall, because The Midtown is just a short walk away!

A friendly neighbour of SAM @ 8Q, Standing Sushi Bar still retains its charm sans the crowds of yesteryear.
.
50% off all Dons on Sundays! This one is a steal if you can’t make it on Mondays and Thursdays for their $3 sashimi!
.
Their Ikura Mentai Donburi ($17) was absolutely amazing! Fresh salmon lays atop well seasoned rice, charred for a smoky flavour. But here’s the catch, take a bite of the charred salmon atop a spoonful of rice, and the salmon belly just melts down into the smooth oils mixing really well into the fluffy rice grains - the flavours in that mouthful are amazing!
.
The eel and salmon mango maki were good too. The eel had a touch of barbecued flavour, fresh and tasty. Mango was slightly sweet but hit the sweet spot with wasabi.
.
A pretty good hideout for a sushi/donburi fix, and definitely worth multiple visits.

Tucked away on the third floor of Fortune Centre, the name “Japanese Curry Express” may raise some eyebrows. But look beyond it, and you'd be surprised to find a gem in a little quiet building.
.
Fresh salmon slices cover a bowl of well seasoned sushi rice, topped with thick dollop of mentaiko torched to perfection, and sprinkled with furikake bits and chilli powder. A bite into the salmon slices smeared my lips with mentaiko sauce because they were so generous with it that it was like gooey thick cream mixing with the meat in my mouth. The resulting Salmon Mentai Don ($14 for large, though wish bowl was bigger) exudes smoky flavours, giving a slightly peaty fragrance. This gem definitely Don disappoint ;)

The usual culprit was the Mazesoba Nogaya ($12.80) topped with an onsen egg, with generous servings of minced pork and spring onion. Delicious to the finish!
.
This time we were more adventurous at trying out their seasonal menu, and went for their Cold Wasabi (13.80). Topped with generous shredded char siew and a pleasing serving of wasabi sauce, the noodles are tossed in ice water, giving a chewy texture. Strong wasabi flavours blend well with the fragrance of the bonito flakes, giving a refreshing kick in every bite without being overpowering.
.
The seasonal menu is only available at their Tanjong Pagar outlet, and started from Aug this year. A definite stop for your ramen cravings!

We ordered two bowls, the black and white (swipe ➡️), they also have the extreme chili and pesto version but we weren’t feeling too adventurous.
.
Black King is an interesting take on the usual roasted garlic version. Soup is just as rich as the white version but a tad too powdery, probably from the garlic paste added to the broth. The rich soup is tasty but the squid flavour was slightly strong, overshadowing the pork bone flavours.
.
Butao King (white) - this soup is rich and not overly cloying, but slightly on the saltier end and seems a little flat in terms of layers of flavors. On the order chit, you have to indicate your preferred spice level, we’d recommend just a 1 as the spicy sauce adds a kick but too much covers the taste of the rich pork bone soup.
.
Pork shoulder was lean and tasted slightly porky, but their pork belly was exceptional. Probably stewed for hours, the fats were rendered down and had a good texture and sinful caramelised pleasure in every bite.
.
Overall, a decent place for a less pricey ramen fix, but with strong flavours meant for the heavier palettes. Working in Suntec? Skipped lunch? Worth your dinner bucks if you’re craving some ramen and don’t want to travel too far! Note that they are closed 3-5pm if you're heading down!

What differentiates this ramen place from others is that thick and creamy tokotsu broth to bathe the thin long noodles and large tender pieces of charshu. Their broth is made from pork bones and simmered for over 12 hours to achieve that creamy texture. Black Tokotsu ($13.50) had a smoky flavour from fried garlic paste and sesame added to the broth. Although thick and creamy, there was a certain lightness that you won't mind having this regularly. Bowl came garnished with black fungus and spring onions. Truly affordable and yum!
