Steamboats (Or Anything DIY)
There’s no actual grains in the soup as it comes, but they add it in at the end of the meal, together with a couple of prawns each and a tasty prawn oil (made with the prawn heads) if you order their Signature Prawn Congee.
Opened in July, this no-frills congee hotpot spot is perfect for a relaxed dinner. The ‘soup’ is earthy and comforting, using the porridge liquids that gets tastier as you continue cooking.
The ingredients were all tasty and affordable as well. Loved the clams, though slightly small, they were fresh and sweet. Best part about the meal was the super tasty homemade chili soy sauce they serve, packed with coriander, spring onions, ginger, garlic and more herbs and spices. Total damage for two: $56. Will be back!
Beauty In A Pot’s original shark collagen soup has officially made way for a pork/chicken collagen soup, and man, I don’t even miss the old one! It’s silky smooth, creamy without being overbearing and just has loads of flavour. It certainly left an impression and I know I’ll be back just to slurp this back up.
FINALLY kicked my 美人锅 virginity. Of course we got the signature collagen soup as one of the bases, with the other being the mala. A sip of the soup and it’s easy to see why people keep coming back! There’s something special about the silkiness of their rich collagen soup that’s just super addictive. The quality of their meats are great as well and I loved their ox tongue and the drunken prawns (you can pour in the Shao Xing wine to change up the soup’s flavour too).
Will I come back? Mmmmm, while the food was good, the prices are a little scary. And I much rather the entire HDL experience, or Tsukada Nojo if I’m craving a dose of collagen. 😛
Ask me about old-school charcoal steamboats and the first name that pops to mind is 天外天. Definitely order the pomfret, it may be slightly pricier but the soft, velvety flesh is worth that few bucks. The soup is tasty and packed with flavour (though it was a bit salty), and the yam was cooked till soft but still with a good bite.
Something I really love is their sweet, garlicky chilli that seems quite unique to them! Almost like a Thai chilli sauce but not quite as intense, perfect for the delicate pomfret chunks. The steamboat is great but the awesome zi char dishes (that’s super value for money) here means that you’ll be back for more!
After my previously underwhelming encounter with Yet Con, I wasn’t too excited about this, but I think I’ve been proven wrong! Hidden away in the basement of Golden Mile Tower, the old-school eatery serves up a pretty mean chicken rice and a simple but heartwarming steamboat.
The steamboat ($36/small) comes with plenty of ingredients from sliced beef, pork, prawns, squid, sea cucumber, fish balls, liver and even cockles! Might taste simple at first, but it gets tastier as all the liao simmers in the steamboat. Dip the it all in their stellar chilli sauce that has a nice acidity to it. Don’t forget about their chicken rice ($10/half chicken) too! Their rice is one of the most fragrant I’ve had in a while and the chicken was really tender too, evidently the large crowd of uncles that filled the place seem to agree with us too. 😜
