With so many stalls selling this dish taking shortcuts nowadays, it is heartening there are still a few that continue to honour the traditional method of cooking each order from scratch. Because they use raw rice, a longer wait time is unavoidable. To manage customers' expectations, they even have a sign mounted in front, stating a 15-minute wait at least.
Although the famous Three Sisters Claypot Rice stall in Chinatown's Smith Street Food Complex remains my number one go-to spot for this dish, Fei Kee's is pretty tasty too. I like that their chicken pieces are large and free of bones, while the "lap cheong" and cabbage are plentiful. Interestingly, the element of saltiness comes more from the tiny crunchy small dried shrimps added on just before serving rather than the traditional way of incorporating bits of salted fish at the cooking stage.
A plate costs between $9-10 dollars, depending on your choice of meat. The mutton briyani is supposed to be the bomb. I had the chicken briyani and the rice is super good!
It was my first time trying their "Laksa Goreng" although I have been coming to Dahlia Cafe for a couple of years.
Not sure if the cook missed something out or I was under a wrong impression but my tastebuds couldn't detect any "laksa" flavour in here. It was also sweeter (in a "chilli sambal" plus tomato sauce way) than I anticipated. Having said that, these factors did not detract from it being a tasty thick "beehoon" dish. The amount of prawns, squid, fish cake and egg was rather plentiful for the price too.
Therefore, as long as you don't expect a classic Nonya laksa fried dry-style (which is what I had in mind), you won't be disappointed.
Sliced beef in fried rice isn't something that crosses my mind automatically but it turned out to be satisfying when I tried the dish at Dahlia's Cafe. Initially, I was surprised to learn that it's non-spicy. Since I wanted a bit of kick, I asked for a saucer of their "sambal belachan". A smart move if I may say so myself, because mixing that into the fried rice added a nice boost to the overall flavour. Love how the pickled green chilli threw in a fruity spicy bite too.
The "sambal hijau" or green chilli sambal comes spread all over the chicken (which they fry only upon order, so be prepared to wait). This mashed up green chill is much tamer in terms of spiciness than the red/dark red version you get with most "ayam penyets". However, what it lacks in heat, it compensates in fragrance. Although oily, I find it very appetising mixed into the rice.
Since I wanted more vegetables, I also ordered a "sambal kangkong" ($4) which was ok except that they could have cut back on the fried shallots.
Located along North Bridge Road, The Ramen Stall is a Halal-certified shop serving affordably priced Japanese dishes till 6am. Swing by after a late movie with friends or after a long night at work with your colleagues and order a piping hot bowl of Volcano Ramen ($11). The chicken-based broth is robust in flavour and is sure to satisfy with slices of chicken chashu and bamboo shoots. Choose from three levels of spiciness ā you might want to stick to Level 2 unless you really love a kick! If you're in the mood for something lighter, have the Kaisen Don ($16.90). The rice comes topped with freshly sliced salmon and tuna cubes.
Avg price: $15 per person

Shoik Feeling for Beef Ramen! This dish is mouthwatering yet satisfying both your taste buds and stomach!! The beef itself is tender and soft.
The taste of Spicyness adds a lil Kick into the ramen Itself!
Price : S$12.90
$11
Can choose the spicy level from 1 to 3. Practically it's more Chilli at level 3. Suggest you to ask for the Chilli separately in a saucer. Chilli not bad la but at level 3, it made me cough haha. The broth was goood.
Soyammy! Tasted like 4 fingers'! The only difference was the size/wt. of the serving of the tofu and the sprinkle of sesame seeds. While 4fingers are in rectangular thick blocks (akin to your whole butter blocks/slabs) these one's are flatter and more squarish! Oh and you can order without rice so it's cheaper than 4fingers! @$3.50
