Salmon Mentai Don ($8.80) is a @donyasingapore signature. Watch them squeeze a generous amount of house-made mentaiko sauce over a slab of fried salmon. It crackles loudy as they torch it at the counter.
.
It's a bite into a firm salmon that has a meaty bite. It's sweet from mentaiko sauce, yet salty from its batter. The distinct grains of Japanese rice underneath carries some of its charred flavour. I'd love more of the donburi sauce that sweetens it. I'd pair this don with a side to add more depth in its flavour. More garnishing or donburi sauce would help too!
Food Republic @ Shaw House upped the food court game by having a designated corner of Japanese food stalls.
The first stall I tried was Omurice Factory as the food models at the stall front were just so enticing. Instead of the signature demiglas and the seductive curry, I chose to have white cream omurice ($8.90).
There are 3 toppings to choose from for additional of $3.90: pork cutlet, fried prawns and chicken cutlet. If you are interested, add melted cheese for just $1.90. Big eaters can include everything! š
This plate of Omurice was above my expectation for food court standard and its price. š Reasons being, the portion was really huge, pork cutlet was thick albeit slightly dry and the omelette's doneness was on spot - it was still a little wet and wobbling.
But I was a little sad that there was no ketchup at the stall to let my draw a heart on my omurice. š And usually omurice uses fried rice but Omurice Factory uses plain rice.
The fettuccine was thick, flat with an al dente texture that was a tad too tough for my liking; perhaps the linguine would be a better option. Nevertheless, the generous portion of savoury, tender and juicy bacon slices, chewy and earthy button mushrooms were a great complement creamy, flavourful and cheesy sauce that was surprisingly enjoyable without being too overwhelming and gelat. At a pocket friendly pricing
Matcha Hokkaido Ice Cream Puff. Decently priced at $3.90, this ice cream puff with choux pastry like texture, crispy and airy encapsulating a big spoonful of light milky matcha ice cream. Awesome to the max!
Finally got to try the Salmon Mentai Don ($10 for regular size) after hearing so much about this place. Salmon sashimi slices were torched and charred to perfection, which worked in tandem with the creamy yet slightly spicy dollop of mentaiko sauce atop. The Japanese rice here was commendable too ā vinegary enough to cut through the heaviness of the other ingredients without being too acidic. For $10, the quality that one gets for this dish here is definitely a steal! Can't wait to be back to try out their other offerings (their maki's maybe?)!
Situated among the neighborhood, this Thai restaurant is packed during dinner time. So lucky that we didn't have to wait long.
Let's see what's on our table.
Pineapple rice ($6 for small) serves as our main, love the lightly-flavoured rice.
We had 3 dishes consisting of Basil Pork (S$7), Green curry chicken (S$9) and Egg with Thai raddish (S$8). My fave has got to be the basil pork! Goes really well with rice! Green curry has plenty of tender chunks of chicken, though a little rich. Egg with Thai raddish is actually scrambled eggs with chai por, nothing too outstanding though.
Round up the meal with a bowl of red ruby (S$3). I am loving this place for its affordable (no service charge and GST!) and yummlicious Thai cuisine! Highly recommended šš
Not halal certified, but it's no pork no lard & the meats are from halal suppliers | I got the Cheesy Affair ($9.90), upgraded from fries to Aglio Olio Pasta ($2.00) and had a side dish of Mozzarella Cheese Sticks ($4.80). The wait was less than ten minutes and the food was hot. I don't know why I expected the pasta to be bland but holy hell it wasn't?? It was so good I'm so bad with describing tastes but it was so flavorful and absolutely delicious. I didn't even have to add pepper or salt or whatever!! And the cheesy fish omg when they said it was a cheesy affair, they MEANT it. It had the cheese sauce on top and look at the picture, so generous right??? And they stuffed the fish with cheese too. It tasted heavenly. The cheese sticks were tasty as well but three sticks for $4.80 isn't worth it in my opinion :/ They have free fruit-infused iced water which you can just take so that's nice!! Overall I LOVED this place and the prices are so good?? The food is lovely?? Definitely going back here!
Hands down the cheapest teochew porridge I've had to date and I still think it's mighty yummy and comforting. The whole assortment of dishes here only costed us $7 (note: 2 meats and 2 vegetables). The lor ba was definitely the highlight of the meal. It was as meaty as it was fatty, drenched in a super umami braised sauce. I personally love the minced pork and soft cabbage as well. #BurppleCheapNGood
Now you don't have to travel all the way to Redhill for the famous Hong Seng Curry Rice.
Tucked in at @sgsmu's School of Economics is a tinier but modern stall in contrast with its 20-year-old counterpart at Redhill.
It's where many come to get their Hainanese curry png fix in the heart of town.
The fiery curry sauce has the right amount of savoury spice that doesn't further scorch your tongue, especially undesirable with Singapore's heat. My favourite part is definitely its special sweet sambal ikan bilis (available in take away containers)! The sets go for S$5.50 and include a main meat, a sauce, a fried egg, sambal ikan bilis, chap chye, rice and a drink
Wish the stall was opened while I was still at SMU. My lunch conundrums would have easily been solved.
Ah Loy Thai is one of the places that offer yummy thai food at decent prices. Best to make reservation as the place was soon filled with people before dinner time.
Ordering a wide spread of food, some dishes stood out for us: Fried Glass Noodle ($7.90), Thai Pandan Chicken (4 pieces for $10) and Fried Butter Calamari ($8.90). The last is their signature and not to be missed. Deep fried calamari drenched in their unique own made butter and chilli sauce, just so addictive!!
