I read from some food reviewer that there is very cheap and good crab Beehoon in Toa Payoh and I was scratching my head to think...where it is that I have not heard of in Toa Payoh that serves good food?!?

So I got off my high horse to googled a little and read some more reviews to get a fuller picture of what's happening.

So it turned out that it's true that there is a stall in a Coffeeshop in Toa Payoh that serves up a Claypot worth of crab Beehoon soup that can fight the famous Mellben and Uncle Leong's ones. It is opened by the chef who brought us Don's Personal Pie. But the shocker is not that some reviewers find it BETTER than the famous Mellben's and Uncle Leong's ones BUT the fact that each Claypot is only $20 each! When I read this, I was like...sure another?!?

So tonight I took my hubby that reading about the place is no good, I HAD to check it out for myself. So hubby and I went down for an early dinner at 6pm to beat the dinner crowd. But the crowd obviously also thought like me and every table in the Coffeeshop is taken. And I so mean EVERY TABLE. I was shocked that a Coffeeshop can be so well occupied!

2nd shocking news was that they have no more crabs! The stall uncle explained that there was a shipment of crabs that didn't arrive from Sri Lanka so they were sold out. I stood there stun like vegetable and it took me a while to realize that it's not the end of my world and the stall do sell other seafood selections other than crabs. Phew! So I 'settled' for Prawn Beehoon Soup and Black Pepper Prawn Beehoon.

Prawn Beehoon soup was served up in a Claypot but it's just a serving pot, the food is not cooked IN the Claypot. So actually, don't play with my feelings and just use a normal bowl yah? For $10, the Claypot had 3 fairly large prawns, 2 juicy large scallops and fishcake slices. The winner for me was the soup! I appreciated the fact that it was full bodied in taste and slightly herbal too! I could taste the tang Gui in it and it complemented the prawns very well. One Claypot could feed 2 small eaters or just me. I couldn't stop eating and I drained every drop of the good soup!

I have had crab Beehoon soup in Mellben quite a few times and I must say that Don's soup is not as flavourful as Mellben's but I also didn't need to drink lots of water tonight. I remember Mellben's soup was yummy but laden with MSG too. So in conclusion, I would prefer to lap up Don's awesome soup any time, any day, and twice on Sunday's.

I am such a super fan at this point!
