Glad that I can now fix my craving for the popular Taro balls from Jiu Feng in SG now!
Chose one of the Taro Balls Signature series; known as Nine Fresh Signature ($2.50) - with beancurd, grass jelly, taro ball, red beans, green beans, pinto beans and peanuts (you can choose either soft or crunchy peanuts). This is basically all in one, for people like me who like a bit of everything. Taro ball was indeed chewy and QQ, not forgetting the smooth and silky grass jelly and beancurd!
Served icy cold, this is a perfect hideaway dessert from the sunny weather to indulge in the value for money (or rather, honestly cheap for the great variety) dessert.

Check out my blog post on this ice cream palour in the west.

Coconut Kaya Swirl, Thai Milk Tea, Salted Egg and Purple Yam

It looks a tad messy, but this eggs benedict was one of the better ones I tried thus far. There're so many eggs ben about most of them kinda taste the same after awhile; but Shelter's rendition, with a huge slab of smoked salmon and sweet tomato salsa, was a breath of fresh air. Served on a nice chewy bagel, it was a wonderful take on the classic brunch dish well worth a try.

This new bar situated along Emerald Hill at Peranakan Place takes inspiration from the humble buah keluak (black nut), an ingredient frequently used in Indonesian and Peranakan cuisine. Serving bar bites and a few mains for dinner, go for the Balukoo Wanton ($18) β€” crisp, deep-fried wantons stuffed with a spicy buah keluak filling. For something more substantial, try the Asian-influenced Ayam Bakar Burger ($18) brimming with the flavours of lemongrass, assam, blue ginger and kaffir lime leaves, while the juicy chicken leg is glazed in sweet and sticky kecap manis and a homemade rempah spice. Grab a few drinks to wash it all down!

New to hipster enclave of The Bedok Marketplace is Hot Pans, a stall which focuses solely on Dutch baby pancakes. Open from noon till 10pm, you'll be able to settle your cravings long before dinner. For the uninitiated, these babies are warm, eggy, crepe-like pancakes served in a small pan. The Classic Dutch Baby is the simplest of the variations served here β€” a choice of drizzle and a scoop of ice creamβ€” allowing you to experience it in its true form. For something a little fancier, go for the Cinnamon Apple Crumble ($7.50) that comes with caramelised apples, raisins and salted caramel ice cream. This is a great dessert to share after a good meal.

Tucked away on the second floor of Tanjong Pagar Plaza, this homely little Thai dessert cafΓ© decked out in wood and Thai-themed ornaments is a lovely spot to relax with a sweet treat. It serves a wide variety of sweets like the classic Mango Sticky Rice ($6.00), but it is the unique gems like the Jasmine Jelly ($4.50) that you should really try. This humble-looking jelly sits atop shaved ice, and other condiments such as red ruby and tapioca pearls, providing a chewy bite against the soft, yielding jelly. For a light tea-time snack, go for their steamed bread served with a variety of dips, such as the Steamed Bread with Durian dip ($5) β€” the potent flavour of the fruit is carried by a creamy, smooth spread that really is quite irresistible.

Quite the underrated gem, Claude's is definitely worth an exploratory visit - there's quite the variety of desserts (think pancakes and Shibuya toasts) and brunch options (quesadillas, pita sandwiches and your usual mac & cheese, full English breakfasts etc).

From the same folks who brought us Yoogane, Andong Zzimdak at Raffles City's basement specialises in Korean stews. You might be tempted to order the Mini Seafood Pancake ($9.90), but it might be wise to opt for the Chicken Karage ($9.90) instead and share these light and crisp nibbles and leave precious stomach space for the hearty stews. Then, dive into the ginormous portion of Andong Jjimdak (small $45.90, large $55.90), a mildly spicy chicken stew with a soy-based sauce that originates from the Andong province of South Korea, and brims with carrots, potatoes and translucent, chewy sweet potato noodles. This is the kind of soulful food that is best shared among a small group of friends β€” you'll definitely leave with full, warm, happy bellies.

Alfero is an oldie but goodie; you can tell by the way they store their gelato – in a pozzetto to ensure freshness. What's outstanding here is the raved about Pistachio gelato, intense in flavour with a good dose of pistachio nuts. The Bacio (hazelnut and chocolate) is a safe bet, but Durian and Gula Melaka are excellent choices if you feel like something more local. Rest assured that you're getting premium gelato as Alfero freshly churns the gelato using natural ingredients imported from Italy and other parts of Europe, resulting in a super smooth authentic gelato. If you are lactose intolerant, they have dairy-free fruit sorbets too!

Your taste buds might just get a little bit confused here, with all the unusual ice cream flavours like Miso Gula Melaka, Pineapple Coconut and Cloves, and even Hoisin! Incorporating hoisin into a dessert is a daring move, but hey, it works. You can also choose sweet or savoury waffles; the savoury one has blue cheese and ham, which actually balances out the sweetness of the ice cream. For something more familiar, go for the Lychee Rose or the Pandan Kaya ice cream. Expect the texture of the ice cream here to feel less creamy and more slushy-like.
