Japanese Food
Pictured is the Uoboshi Tonkotsu Toriniku Ramen, which comes with slices of pork cheek and hints of fish stock. The dish that stole my heart was their Signature Grand Tonkotsu Ramen ($14.90), that comes with three different types of meat - Pork cheek, and two kinds of pork belly in different sauces. The meat was well done and the soup was hearty and just the right consistency. I would prefer my noodles a bit springier but everything else was just right. For a meal at RWS, it’s affordable and I would highly recommend.
I had the tonkatsu bento, which came with a piece of tamago, mushroom rice and tonkatsu drizzled in teriyaki sauce. The mushroom rice reminded me a bit of sapo(?) fan, but it was slightly dry. Tonkatsu was alright, was a little disappointed they didn't allow add on of mentaiko/cheese for bentos, only ala carte. The egg wasn't as fluffy as expected. Overall, I felt it was rather mediocre and did not live up to the hype. My friend's pork belly was dry as well. I will give it another chance and try the Kani mayo, but for now I don't think it's worth $10. The puffs, on the other hand are pretty good! More about that in my next post.
I love love love soba, but today I was feeling a little adventurous so I decided to try MOF's cold ramen instead! It certainly is quite different, but in a good way. As usual, #Burppleroo came in handy and my order came in around half an hour? The noodles were still nicely chilled, and the snow crab tempura I ordered was crispy too! But I'll still stick to Ebi Tempura. Those who love Japanese food, this week is your chance as Deliveroo is having Japanese week where 2 people can have a set for $25 at selected merchants :)
It started out with truffle fries, truffle xiao long bao, and now we have... truffle ramen ($16.90). A dry (and cold) version of the traditional Japanese ramen tossed in truffle oil with shavings for good measure. Normally I prefer my ramen soupy, probably because it's more "shiok" to slurp up, but for those who love the fragrant earthiness of truffle, this is worth a try. The aroma alone that wafts to you when the waiter sets your bowl down will get your salivary glands working. The texture of the noodles is a bit like Sarawak Kolo Mee, springy and with a nice bite. However the chashu was a bit too sweet for my liking. I'll be back again to try the dons and soup-based ramen!
Scallop Mentaiyaki Carpaccio is a must order whenever I come to Sushi Bar (besides the sushi rolls of course). Thinly sliced fresh scallop done carpaccio style goes wonderfully with the salty creaminess of the mentaiko sauce. More please!
It's truffled rice with angus short rib beef, need I say more? Yolk was done to a perfect degree and I love how the truffle gave the rice that earthy flavour. And they have special lunch set offers (including weekends) so the dons can go as cheap as $12.
This is sneakily hidden in the top floor food court at Square 2. I love love love their cod fish! The sashimi is also very fresh and well cut (the chef is an authentic Japanese chef) and the prices are pretty reasonable. They also have Wagyu Beef.
The Chirashi Don set ($18.80) comes with salad, miso soup, chawanmushi (which was a little lackluster) mochi dessert, and green tea. This set is extremely value for money, considering how generous they are with the sashimi cubes. The avocado to sashimi ratio was just right and didn't leave me feeling imbalanced or unsatisfied. I'd definitely come back just for this again, one of my favourite Chirashi dons!
At $19, Babette's Chirashi Don is pretty worth it (it comes with miso soup too) I would have preferred slightly less vegetables and more sashimi but that's probablg because I'm a carnivore. Their honey yuzu ice blended ($7) is also very refreshing 👍🏻
Finally trying gen 2, cause I'm always attracted to the unagi is gen 1 😂 however, i still like gen 1!
Choose from how hard you want your noodles to be, as well as what soup you like. The waiters and chefs are all Japanese, and are really cute and earnest! For less than $15 to eat authentic ramen and with free flow eggs, this is one spot I always head to to satisfy my cravings. Their gyoza is good too
