Known for its dark, hipster interior and good food, Symmetry commands a queue on weekends, making reservations a must. Start off with the Crispy Baby Squid ($14) or the Truffle Fries ($15), a crowd favourite with its heady truffle aroma in a seemingly bottomless bucket. Go for the Truffle Eggs Mushroom ($22) ā scrambled eggs drizzled with truffle oil, sauteed mushrooms, a slice of toast and hashbrown ā or the Big Breakfast ($24) for its insanely good blueberry butter. Finally, finish off by sharing their epic waffles ($16), it is a beautiful mess of bananas, strawberries, peanut butter, hazelnut chocolate, maple syrup and vanilla ice cream. The coffee here is excellent, sure to please all you coffee fiends; they use the Slayer!
Seasons Bistro is great choice for brunch if you're in Orchard, serving photogenic American-style brunch dishes. The Buttermilk Pancake Stack ($18) is sure to please those who prefer sweet brunch plates, while those who prefer savoury dishes should go for the Montreal & Lox ($21), featuring smoked salmon, tomatoes, capers and a good, chewy bagel with cream cheese. If you can't decide between savoury and sweet, go for the Lumberjack ($26) ā eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries on top a pancake, with maple syrup alongside. The reasonable prices and good food here keep people coming back for more!
Housed in a stunning light-filled space, Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters is the venture between Thailand's Pacamara Coffee and Oz Specialty Coffee, so you can expect both good coffee and brunch fare. Extremely popular is the Truffle Benedict ($18): truffle hollandaise sauce blankets poached eggs, smoked ham and wilted spinach, all set atop brioche toast. The Salted Caramel Banana French Toast ($16) is another winner, think eggy, fluffy French toast doused in salted caramel sauce. Other popular dishes include the Eggs Royale ($18) and Red Velvet Pancakes ($16).
You're not going to find your typical eggs ben for brunch here. Instead, expect to be surprised by unusual combinations like their Salted Egg Sweet Potato Fries ($12), which are great for sharing. Probably the most surprising is the Aburi Broccoli Salad ($12), a truly inspired dish of torched broccoli topped with shaved parmesan, cracked pappadum and coconut sugar. You wouldn't expect it to work, but it just does. For a hearty main, don't hesitate to order the Beef and Grains ($24), a Japanese-inspired dish that is all umami and super hearty. Finish off with the Banana Beignets, and if you'd like to go all out, have their Malted Pie Crust Shake ($9) as well ;)
ATTENTION! ATTENTION! As of 1st April 2015, The Naked Finn has moved into a stunning new space, complete with a gorgeous vertical garden, at 39 Malan Road. Just in time too for my first ever taste of their famous lobster roll š
Having heard theirs is as good, if not better than the one at Pince & Pints, I was naturally buzzing with curious excitement even before I got there.
Turns out they offer two types of lobster roll which are identical in every way except for one difference: whether the lobster meat is tossed (very lightly) in mayo or creme fraiche (a type of sour cream). Sooooo.... I ordered BOTH. Yeah, I figured there was no way I could decide which was better so it had to come down to that šš
Anyway, the promised 90 grammes of live American lobster in each roll (they looked the same to me when served) was heavy on the butter and exceedingly well-prepared. Regardless of mayo or creme fraiche, the level of sweetness and succulence of the lobster chunks was at the absolute max. If push comes to shove, I'd say the former was a touch creamier and richer. But seriously, even if the dressings had tried, I doubt either could have overshadowed the natural flavours of the super-fresh crustacean. Credit must be given to the fabulous buttered and toasted buns as well - they added so much to every bite. I wasn't crazy about the accompanying fries but the salad was decent.
Now that I have inhaled the Connecticut-style lobster rolls here--pausing a nanosecond in between to grunt in happiness--my conclusion is I much prefer these to the cold lobster roll (priced at $48++) I had at Pince & Pints. Yes, their version was nicely presented and enjoyable but because I have an affinity for warm sandwiches, I can't help but favour The Naked Finn's.
I live in hope that one day, they will decide to serve them for dinner too š
Always hesistant to queue at CMCR on weekends? Well, you might want to take a chance and hope the queues are shorter during this festive period. Go for their Turkish Breakfast, or their Croissant Croque Monsiuer, or the Braised Ox Cheeks Eggs Ben (yes it's hard to decide)!
*Closed on 18th Feb
This CNY period might be the best time to score a table at this ever-popular cafe. Pimp your breakfast, and be sure to get their house-smoked salmon! Don't leave without trying a dessert too.
