A quiet Friday night out with the wife turned out to be a rather enjoyable seafood dinner with some good friends.
Venue was a seafood place within 5 minutes walk from the Aljunied MRT station. Turns out one of the couples we are meeting eat pretty regularly there.
They are running a 2 crab for $68 deal for crabs sized about 800g and we ordered 2 to be done black pepper style and 2 chilli style. Of the 2 styles the black pepper one tasted more flavourful than the chilli one which was rather average. The signature kam heong style will have to wait for next visit.
We ordered various other dishes to round up the meal. Something called Dai Lok noodles was a particular revelation with the robust flavour of the black sauce coming through the chewy texture of the thick noodles. Other standout dishes included the calamari coated in salted egg yolk batter and the lah lah cooked in herbal broth while the coffee spare ribs deserve a mention.
In case I forget to mention this, this KL styled cze char stall used to be situated in a kopitiam at Block 85 Toa Payoh Lorong 4 until they moved to present location 2 years ago.

Deep fried beancurd with wasabi is a bit like beancurd chunks and coated with cereal batter. The wasabi taste is just a light tinge and not spicy at all. Crunchy on the exterior, the bean curd chunks makes it fun to bite!

Whereas for the signature tofu, think silky tofu w a fried exterior and topped w meat. 🀀

1. Kam Heong style Crab (η”˜ι¦™θžƒθŸΉ) using a concoction of different spices. Black pepper, shallots and curry is definitely prominent in this. Savoury with a nice level of spice kick for this super fresh tender crab. 🀀 Too good!

2. Check out the spread we had. With the Stewed clam beehoon in the foreground and Braised slice pork belly with salted fish beside the crab.(More in the post next time) 🍴
3. KL Hokkien Mee. Slightly sweet and savoury sauce w a chewy thick noodles. You can never get the same KL Hokkien Mee as in KL not because the chefs are not up to standard. But because AVA does not allow noodles import of high alkalinity. So what you eat in KL will be more slippery and less chewy (more of a bite), since alkaline prevents gluten structure from forming. So long story short, this is as close as you can get to the real thing in KL! The flavour of the sauce is en pointe! 🍴
4. Steamed Kang kong (new) For every balanced meal, we need vegetables. The best part is the steamed kang kong will not add greasiness to your dinner. It's quite refreshing to have some crunchy tasty greens! 🍴

My friend from Hangzhou once told me that a governor of Hangzhou, θ‹δΈœε‘, wanted a walkway across the West Lake (θ₯ΏζΉ–) to remove the need to make large round tours the lake to get to the opposite side. Upon its completion, he created this dish to reward the workers, hence the name δΈœε‘θ‚‰.

When done right, like what I had at an old traditional Chinese restaurant in Hangzhou, the fatty layer is gelatinous and melty, flesh tender and marinated till infused with the dark sauce. The pork belly here could have been braised for longer hours so that it could be more tender with more ε…₯ε‘³ (flavour infused into flesh), but I like the flavour of the sauce, and its thick consistency that coated the pork belly.

Now this was what I could think of right now! CRABS!! Need to go back for more.. "Kam heong" style of cooking was the winner!! The fragrance from the spices blend made of dried shrimps, chilli, shallots and garlic so πŸ‘πŸ½

Every mouthful with fragrance from the soya sauce but I was hoping to find that "wok hei" punch instead. Despite that, this was definitely a decent plate of noodles which I will come back for if I'm around this area.
