Tomato

Came here to try the highly raved Chilled Pigs Ear & Cucumber ($10) but left with a stomach full of amazing dishes like the Cabbage and Pork Dumplings ($8-10?), Roasted Eggplant ($2.50), Pork Ribs ($16), Tomato & Egg ($8), Mapo Tofu ($10???) and also tried the Chicken Gizzard Skewers ($1/ea). Would have loved to try more of their BBQ skewers if not for the fact that we underestimated the portion sizes. Be careful tho, every dish comes drenched with oil. Definitely save this for those cheat days.

In addition of it being grilled, it's seasoned unapologetically with their 'Secret' Chilli powder (it's gotta be 'Secret' right??) 🌶
All I can say is that the Chinese really know how to season, prepare & execute their food well. 😋

ACAMASEXPLAINS💮: Well it ain't wrong calling it the Tomato as it packed quite a punch of Umami. The effects of grilling makes the 'skin' of the Brinjal/Eggplant a little Char, use a spoon to scrape the 'flesh' that have the texture near to a purée. 🖖🏻

I’m a sucker for eggplant dishes and if you’re too, please get this! Grilled and peppered with that secret chili seasoning powder used in all their BBQ items, the result’s a melty soft textured eggplant elevated with a nice smokiness and a tame kick of spice. Just in case you can't find it in their thick menu books, this dish number is 3009. #BurppleSGLateNight

Open till late night and definitely there to curb any rumbling tummies way past your bedtime. 🍴
1. Pig’s Ear of Cucumber 猪耳朵拌黄瓜 [$10]. For anyone that's skeptical of weird animal parts, this will change you. The crunchy pig's ear together with the tangy, savory seasoning. You will not stop reaching out for the pig's ear 😉
🍴
2. Wanton 特色麻辣拌 [$10] I've no idea why they would call it wanton. Or maybe they wanted to call it "one ton" because you can't stop eating it till you become one ton 😂 This should be some kind of chef's special Mala bowl where the chef adds whatever they want and top with that spicy numbing seasoning. It's not too spicy but definitely numbing and definitely delicious. 🤤 $10 for a huge bowl of bean curd skin, potato, kelp, sausages.. where can you find such value for money!!
🍴
3. The Tomato 全茄 [$1.50]. Not quite a tomato, but a brinjal. Though reddish, it's not spicy at all. And that seasoning is really the bomb. It just taste so good w everything! The brinjal slightly melts in your mouth and the seasoning really added a dimension to the flavour.
🍴
4. Deep Fried Pork Intestine 干煸肥肠 [$16]. Using the same seasoning as the brinjal. It is crunchy and tasty. Till I reached the inside and the flavours of the intestine hit me. Still not my thing but I'll definitely give it plus points for tasty and crunchy exterior! 🍴
This place will transport you to China with its full blow authenticity in ambience and food. It is worth an experience and it was so good, that I will definitely come again. 😂

Besides the oddly-named "The Tomato" (which is really a roasted egg plant served piping hot), the other that we had at this character-filled joint was a chilled one.
This version came dressed in light soya sauce and buried under a tonne of raw garlic, chillies and fresh herbs, which of course, ensured its instant popularity.

After you've experienced the hilarity of northern Chinese menus, you'll soon know to trust the photos instead of the names. When we first walked past this place, we were on our way to eat somewhere else. But since it was so packed and it smelt so good, we knew we had to come by for a second dinner. Eggplants are my weakness, so this photo was enough to entice me despite the name "the tomato". Roasted till melting, silky smooth texture and topped with leeks and dusted with chili powder, this is a must-order! So good we ordered one more.

"The Tomato".
Yes, believe it or not, in the menu, that's the name this eggplant goes by. Regardless, I am pleased to report there was no identity crisis in terms of taste.
Completely infused with a sultry smokiness from having been grilled, the soft, mushy eggplant came smothered in spring onions, fresh coriander and the fragrant dried chilli spice powder that's popular in North-Eastern China. The outcome was absolutely fantastic.
@iamjaynedoe and I couldn't stop ourselves from ordering another to share before we waddled out of the restaurant.
