Rice Crackers & Cucumber with Caramelised Pork & Dried Shrimp Dip

$6.90 · 7 Reviews

An awesome side and starter, Pho Street’s Rice Crackers & Cucumber with Caramelised Pork & Dried Shrimp Dip ($6.90) undoubtedly stole the show and seemed to have taken the limelight off the Phos in their new menu (at least for me). Surprisingly good, the unassuming appetiser was all fragrant and savoury-sweet. The Cơm Cháy Kho Quẹt was also nicely balanced with a good dose of spices. Heavier on the dried shrimps, the thick dip went amazingly well with the crispy rice cracker, crunchy cucumber sticks and not unexpectedly the Rice Vermicelli Wrap with Crispy Roasted Pork Belly ($6.90) - Banh hoi.

Pairing the addictive shrimp dip from the appetizer - Rice Crackers & Cucumber with Caramelised Pork & Dried Shrimp Dip ($6.90)with the traditional street snack for maximum pleasure, the woven rice vermicelli noodle wraps were a little plain on their own but came alive with the sauce. Nicely seasoned, the bits of chopped scallions and garlic atop the meat also added a great flavour. However, folding the crispy pork belly in with the side vegetables made the wrap quite a mouthful so no tiny bites.

It tasted similar to hae bee hiam with sweet sauce. If you're a fan of hae bee hiam, you'll love this! .

Instead of the usual rice papers, what you get here at Pho Street are these rice vermicelli wraps! Wrap it around the well seasoned crispy pork belly (just thought it was a lil tough) and top it off with the vegetables provided. It was interesting and refreshing, but the wraps were more plain. I would have really liked some sort of sauce to help bring all the elements together. Psst, if you do get the Rice Crackers & Cucumber with Caramelised Pork & Dried Shrimp Dip ($6.90), the shrimp dip went well here. But for the same price, I’d go for the crackers instead!

I must say that this dish was the surprise of the night! Plain looking tray of rice crackers and cucumber strips were all jazzed up with that caramelised pork & dried shrimp dip! The unassuming pot of thick dip was filled with lots of fragrant dried shrimps, caramelized pork and a whole bunch of other spices and herbs. It was a nice balance of spicy-sweet and savory, with a more than manageable amount of heat despite the intimidating color. Super addictive!

A huge thank you to @pho_street for the warm hospitality and @burpple for the kind invite! 🙆🏻

We were never huge fans of Vietnamese cuisine until we came here to try their food, now we are addicts! Super authentic and delicious Vietnamese food that were extremely rich in flavor at an affordable price! Definitely worth the experience. We tried the rice vermicelli wrap with crispy roasted pork belly ($6.90) which is the centre of the attention in this picture and extremely delicious! We also had other appetisers like rice crackers and cucumber and caramelised pork accompanied with a pork and dried shrimp dip ($6.90), and also fragrant butter corn with dried shrimp ($3.50). For mains, we devoured the dry rice vermicelli with grilled pork belly and spring roll ($8.90) excitedly because pork belly is our all time favourite! Also tried the pho beef combination ($9.90) and the spicy pork combination rice vermicelli ($8.90). These were all washed down by the Vietnamese salty lemon date ($3.50) and the milk tea with grass jelly ($3.50). Ended off the meal with dessert! Never was a fan of Asian dessert as we've always preferred our ice cream and cakes, but these proved to be just as tasty! Tried the cream of mung bean with coconut cream and crushes peanuts ($3.50), Vietnamese three colour dessert ($3.50) and the sticky rice with black eyed peas dessert! 10/10 would recommend this place and we definitely will be coming back for more! ---------------------------------
