Char Kway Teow

$3.00 · 9 Reviews

Been some time since I've had a char kway teow, and this is not too bad! The $4 portion is neither too sweet nor too salty and the cockles within are really fresh! Probably the only gripe is that the portion is a little small 🤣

So pleasantly surprised, this was pretty damn good. Please eat it piping hot!! So shiok - there’s wokhei, it’s v flavourful, kwayteow wasn’t soggy even tho it was a takeaway! We ordered non-spicy but it was kinda still spicy, though it was a nice tingle of spiciness on the tongue! The only thing that could be improved on was the quality of the lapcheong, it was quite meh. But everything else was great!!

For me a good plate of char kway teow must have a strong wok hei taste, and they do it very well here. Each sinful wok hei laden plate is loaded with cockles & lap cheong (chinese sausages); certainly worth the calories in my opinion.

This humble stall tucked away in Teck Ghee Square Market and Food Centre doesn't get much attention, but it should. Previously located in Bendemeer Food Centre, the underrated stall dishes out plates of wok hei-ladened Char Kway Teow (from $3), loaded with fresh cockles and lup cheong — so good! Depending on who's cooking, expect the noodles to turn out a little differently. The father cooks a wetter version while the son does it a little more dry, resulting in more wok hei. Tastemaker Cassie Ong determines a good plate of char kway teow by the presence of wok hei and egg, and therefore prefers the son's version more, liking that "you can taste the egg in every bite". Be sure to have what Tastemaker Justin Teo loves most in both plates — the really crispy pork lard!

A good plate of Char Kway Teow for me depends if there's wok hei or if they are generous with the egg. So to see a younger generation cooking up a plate that's packed with wok hei was a surprise. It was of the dry kind but you can taste the egg in every bite.

Second plate we ordered was different as its wetter and the wok hei isn't as strong. Possibly cos it's cooked by another person or maybe we dig in faster for this plate! 😂 after all we took quite some time before we dig in the first.

[Repost: A close up version] I didn't know of any good ones in the North until I was introduced to this, which is pretty good. We ordered this twice - first plate was fried by the son while the second was fried by the dad. They're very different, and we're split on which we prefer.
🔸
The son's plate was good for its wok hei. It was dry but still nicely seasoned with the right amount of savoury sweetness, with some eggy fragrance. The dad's plate was of a totally different style, which is wet without being overly oily. What I love most was the lard which was really crispy.

Are there any fans of this relatively unknown char kway teow here? How do you find this? There are many famous char kway teow in Singapore - Outram, Hill Street, Dong Ji, Zion.. I didn't know of any good ones in the North until I was introduced to this, which is pretty good. We ordered this twice - first plate was fried by the son while the second was fried by the dad. They're very different, and we're split on which we prefer.

As objective as I try to be, it's very difficult for me to recommend char kway teow to people, because some like it wet, some like wok hei, some like it eggy, some are particular on the freshness of the cockles, some have their preference on the balance between savoury and sweet and oil and the lup cheong. If you stay near AMK, can give it a try, review it, tag me and let me know what you think about this!

Ordered the $3.50 portion. Cockles are indeed fresh and the taste is good as well. A 4/5 rating!

Prices are at $3/$3.50 for a plate.

Despite the stall here having its roots from Bendemeer Food Centre 26 years ago, the owner had been in the Char Kway Teow business for even longer as a helper in his brother's stall for many years!

The Char Kway Teow ($3) is served slightly wet and bursting with flavour, as it absorbed the wok hei taste! The ingredients here are cooked optimally so that they don't turn dry and retain their freshness! Cockles lover will love the ones here, which are both big and juicy!

Bendemeer Fresh Cockles Fried Kway Teow is located at Teck Ghee Square Market & Food Centre, #01-13, Block 409 Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, S(560409).
