Vegetable TENDON

$12.90 · 20 Reviews

I like places where I do not need to crack my brain deciding what to order - and this is one of those places - cos at Ginza Tendon Itsuki - you only have a choice of either the Seafood Tendon or Vegetable Tendon - I chose the former. My Tendon came with 2 pieces of prawns, 2 pieces of chicken, 2 long beans, 1 baby corn, 1 piece of mushroom and 1 piece of sweet potato - and topped with those flavourful sweet tempura sauce. Each rice bowl also came with a chawanmushi - which was delightfully smooth and silky - and a bowl of miso soup.

The batter coating of the Tempura was just nice - but unfortunately, it was slightly soggy instead of getting that crunch in every bite - but I’m totally fine with it. What I liked best about this meal was that little surprse hidden under all those tempura pieces - a fried poached egg - break it and that deep bright yellow yolk start to ooze out from it. Yumz...! And while the taste of food can be subjective - I’m glad my friend enjoyed his birthday lunch treat...!!

Visited this place for a few times and will still be one of my go to place for a good tendon! They only have two dishes on the menu, non vegetarian and vegetarian bowls, and they have limited seating space inside. So please beware when you come during peak hour! #igotfoodcoma #burpple

Extremely popular and extensively reviewed, and for good reason. Excellent food quality, quantity and variety at a competitive price. My dining partner and I shared a Special ($13.9++) and Vegetable ($12.9++) bowl; the Special is better. Prawn, egg and pumpkin are excellent, whereas the brinjal and lotus root could be better. Leafy veggies are interesting but would have been better with less batter.

Food aside, Tendon Ginza Itsuki impressed me most with what I see as high responsiveness to customer feedback.

• Many reviews mention the long queues; the vendor responds by placing chairs to sit, providing free dispenser drinks (barley tea was excellent, much better than any drink they sell inside) and using an efficient pre-ordering system.
• Many reviews complain about the ventilation; management clearly decided that renovation or a larger location were not viable, but still made a very amusing effort in providing fabric spray at the payment counter.
• Many older reviewers did not like the chicken breast. The chefs have responded by tenderising and seasoning it brilliantly.

This kind of attitude to improve and adapt is not always present amongst merchants who already have very good business flow, and I think staff and management should be proud of what they've accomplished here.

ACAMASEATS & GTK💮: There are a number of Tempura Donduri 天ぷら丼ぶりspecialty shops in town but Tendon Itsuki still commands long lines of patrons outside their shop even after a few years of operation. However, it ain’t as fantastic as I recall. .

Out of all those primary vegetables featured, it’s the rotating vegetables that stole the limelight, particularly the shiso leaf, the rest was basic at best. After a few tempura, you might get sick of it due to the oiliness and smell, so pair it with the tendon sauce and rice. Will I ever have tendon again? Yes but not here.

Pretty disappointed this time round, not sure if it was because I came when it was near to closing but there were so much batter in my ingredients. It was kinda doughy and I felt like I was eating a lot of flour. 😭 better luck next time round

Their special included a mix of prawn, chicken and vegetable tempura with a special sauce. We loved that there was a tempura egg so nicely done it was deep fried outside oozed out when broken. However, we only wished they used other parts instead of chicken breast which would not be so lean and dry. But still a nice place for a good Tendon.

got the vegetable tendon yet again, loved how consistent they are. Batter is still light and non greasy despite it being fried. Crying tears of happiness 😭 my only complain: I leave the shop smelling like one too

Went back again and this time round, I had the vegetable option. I've got to say, I prefer this way more than their special option. The portion is hugeeeee, so you could probably starve yourself before heading over (I kid). Alright, now back to work with a rather heavy food coma

With the scent of sesame oil, light batter encases a crowd of vegetables that rises well above the rim of a deep bowl of wholesome Hokkaido rice, doused twice over in special housemade sauce — a blend of dashi, mirin, shoyu, sugar and water. Pluck apart the pieces to place on a dish and have them hot, fresh and crisp. Optimally flash fried upon order, they lock in taste and sweetness but little grease. Crunchy corn, long beans and lotus root, tasty egg plant, peppers and pumpkin and a yummy round of leafy greens encased in tempura. A bite into the shiitake mushroom, fried taut in its golden jacket, reveals the juicy insides glistening — tempting.

This Vegetable Tendon ($12.90) comes as a filling set with that savoury, eggy chawanmushi they've got going on 😋 plus a side of earthy miso soup, full of seaweed.
