Kakiage Tempura Soba (Lunch)

$12.00 · 13 Reviews

The soba has a nice bite to it and you get to choose how much soba (100, 200 or 300g) you want in the dish. Plus they provide free flow soft-boiled eggs and tempura flakes. The shabu shabu slices were good too

There's a 1 for 1 offer for this dish during lunch time till the end of the month on @jpassportsg but do note that the free bowl of soba is only limited to a portion size of 100g

The soba here is memorable! It's got a good bite and you can taste that it's handmade! The kakiage is average, nothing spectacular though.

One of the dishes that caught gf's eye again. While hot soba is slowly picking up in singapore, places that sells them have to be really good to set a standard among singaporeans and this is probably one of those places. Their Buckwheat soba made fresh daily, the soba was silky and soft when served. The enormous piece of kakiage was left hanging there covering a third of the bowl. The waiter serving the dish told us to break half and soak one in the soyu broth. I find myself extremely tempted to just dunk all of it into the soup, which I did in the end. Well about 90% of the crispy kakiage anyway. 😛 It's quite value for money as well at around $12, so it's pretty safe on the wallet if you are craving for something delicious and comforting to your stomach.

soba hasn't really properly taken hold of Singaporeans yet - we are properly enamoured by ramen. but the soba at hokkaido izakaya is a worthy (and probably healthier) alternative.
break the kakiage (that's the crispy-looking cracker balancing on top of the bowl) into pieces, dunk it into the bowl and slurp everything up like the world is going to end. it is simultaneously salty, crispy and slightly sweet all in one. the soba is slightly softer than most ramen noodles but that provides a good contrast to the crispy kakiage.
must add, too, service is top notch here. the servers really do know what's good on the menu, and they are always ready to give advice about how to best eat the various dishes.

Substantial and pretty economical, Hokkaido Izakaya’s compact lunch menu offers up a comforting selection of buckwheat noodles with FREE flow of onsen eggs, fried tempura batter and seaweed. Furthermore, you can upsize your soba with a choice of 100g, 200g, or 300g at no additional cost. Such a great deal! Having tried the Kakiage Tempura Soba (S$12) and Wagyu Beef Shabu Shabu Soba ($15), my favourite would definitely be the latter as the former does get a bit gelak after awhile.

Both set also came with onigiri which was a bit of an overkill on carbs but I managed to finish mine after soaking it in the broth. The generous slab of crisp mixed vegetables tempura perched on the bowl adds a nice texture though it does little to enhance the flavours to the dish whereas the thinly sliced beef complemented the warm savoury-sweet broth. The noodles of course, were pretty well done as well. Decent lunch option to satisfy any soba craving - TBH, they got me at free-flow soft boil eggs as each was perfectly done and super shiok when slurping with the soba.

[A word of advice would be to stick to 100g first so as to avoid a food induced coma, as tested by my lunch companions.]

Nomz, just wish I had a bigger portion of the wagyu beef. Left wanting more..
Comes with Onigiri and part of the lunch menu

Hokkaido Izakaya highlight is actually you can get to upsize your soba for free! With the selection of 100g, 200g or 300g. Furthermore, they served free flow of Onsen Tamago too! This is a great for carbs and protein builder out there!

Do be mindful that you do need to wait awhile before your meal is served as the buckwheat soba is freshly made after you order.

Do heed the advise of the staffs, I tried attempting 300g and I was Soo bloated. The texture of the soba was ok, as it did not have the al dente texture but still have the slurping shiokness. As for the beef slices, it has a chewy texture and mixing with the Onsen, it gave a hint of sweetness and savoury taste.

Overall, it was a simple and decent bowl of soba. Oh! You can add some tempura bits if you prefer to have something to munch on. Do take note Hokkaido Izakaya lunch menu has a limited selection, but their dinner has a much larger variety.

🇯🇵 She brought me here knowing I've been eyeing this place. Lunch menu here is very compact (no Japanese tamago with melted butter or the salmon hot pot with milk #onlydinner)! In any case, lunch here is quite economical. Got a heaping bowl of soba with that giant piece of kakiage tempura (vege/seafood) for $12 while @beaverwoo had curry tempura with soba /w a side of milk (gives the curry a light sweetness!) 😋
