Chanced upon this small corner establishment while wandering around Capitol Piazza, and was immediately drawn in by the decent prices. Tried the Ramen with Pork Rib ($8) and Ramen w Prawn Dumpling in Hot Chilli Sauce & Vinegar ($9.80). Noodles were springy, and portions were quite substantial too. Prawn dumplings were actually pretty good if you ignore the thick and doughy skin - the prawn paste had a crunch and a tinge of sweetness which made it so delectable. The broth as well as the dry ramen sauce were good, but I felt that it was missing a certain X factor (comparing to similar fares from the Paradise chains). Pork ribs were also tough.
But ultimately, our meal was cheap, filling, and good! No gst or SVC, the place started filling up at 7pm+, so head over early and get a quick lunch/dinner fix!
For those who prefer their noodles with more meat, the beef lamian is an excellent choice. You get the same springy and al dente hand pulled noodles topped with pieces of tender sliced beef and a beef bone broth which is clean and clear, and subtle yet flavourful. It's perfect for those who want a simple bowl of the noddle which is easy and light on the palate.
800 Bowls also feature a delightful dumplings in red chilli oil.
Their dumplings are plump, meaty and juicy. Each of their dumplings are stuffed full of pork fillings which are only mildly marinated so that you can taste the natural sweetness of the pork meat filling. The red chilli oil sauce is also mildly tangy and spicy to combine elevate the pork filling.
Most dumplings in red chilli oil tend to pack a strong fiery flavour but if you like sth a little mild on the palate, do check out 800 Bowls' dumplings!
Helmed by an ex-Maxim chef with three decades of experience, 800 Bowls signifies his wish of selling 800 bowls of hand-pulled noodles each day.
His hand-pulled noodles are excellent - springy and cooked to al dente goodness with a nice firm bite. These are some of the best hand pulled noodles in Singapore IMHO.
For those who prefer a milder meat sauce, 800 Bowls will definitely hit the right notes. It is light on the palate and does not feel cloy or Msg-laden.
At $6 per bowl, it is also reasonably priced for a CBD eatery and has become our go-to joint for a quick simple dinner after work!
