Had their Braised Pork Belly with Mui Choy (preserved mustard green) Rice - melt-in-your mouth Pork Belly simmered with mui choy - kinda reminded me of the “Mui Choy Zheng Zu Yoke” that my grandma and mom used to cook while growing up. My family is not into these persevered and fatty stuff - so I only get to eat it when I eat out alone or with friends who appreciate them. Guess this is going to be my new go-to place if I crave for a bowl of this savoury, sweet and fragrant childhood dish!!

Ordered the Laksa Seafood Pasta that came with Shrimps, mussels, and scallops - all soaked in that rich and fragrant coconutty laksa gravy - with a sprinkle of finely chopped laksa leaves for that added flavour!

The last time I came - the pasta was overcooked - but no complaint this time. Again impressed with the freshness of the seafood - particularly the shrimps - firm, fresh tasting and crunchy - Lunch was good and especially so when paired with a refreshing mug of beer. Cheer!! 🍻

Well, my family did! Went to Tonkatsu by Ma Maison cos I think they have one of the better pork cutlet meal here.

Ordered my usual - Rosu Katsu Set. As expected - dinner was good and didn’t disappoint at all - the thick Tonkatsu pork cutlet was perfectly done - crispy on the outside - tender and juicy on the inside.

Besides the meat - the other thing I love about eating there is cos the tonjiru - miso soup with pork and root vegetables such as daikon, carrots, onions - is free flow - so hearty and comforting - and since it’s refillable, I had 3 bowls. Wanted a 4th - but didn’t cos my wife and kids were all giving me that disgusted look...! 😔 if only they could serve it in a bigger bowl 🤣

Nasi Lemak, Wontan Mee, Mee Siam, Chee Cheong Fun, Prata... Naah, too common. Stumbled upon this porridge place located in Hougang while googling where to eat - and since I’ve not had porridge for a long time - decided to have this for breakfast.

So many types of Porridge to choose from - ordered the Century Egg and Sliced Pork Porridge - the porridge was thick, gooey and flavourful. Kind of reminded me of my grandma’s porridge. And they were so generous with the ingredients too - chunks of century egg and sliced pork at the bottom of the bowl. I could have added an egg as well - bu tbtotally forgot about it.

It didn’t come with any YouTiao (Chinese Crullers/Chinese Fritters, Chinese Donut) - so we had to order it separately. My friend ordered the Century Egg to share. Oh wow - that is definitely a must-try - the century eggs eaten with the pickled and minced ginger, combined with the sauce and a hint of spiciness from the chilli padi - it was so, so good!

Found out later that they actually have an outlet at Chong Pang - nearer to where I live. Well, if I ever want a hot comforting bowl of goodness - this is going to be the place to go to now!!

Our next stop was Nam Sing Hokkien Mee at unit #01-32.

I was told that there is usually a VERY long queue - but since it was slightly after lunch time - there weren’t any. Lucky us. Ordered a small plate ($5) since I figured we were probably going to try more “must-try” food. 🤣
.
The freshly cooked dish came with nice mix of yellow egg noodle and Bee Hoon and a generously amount of shrimp, squid and egg - it wasn’t as soupy as some other Hokkien Mee - probably cos the noodles have already soaked up those rich and flavourful umami-filled seafood broth - and a squeeze of the lime juice over the noodle for that extra zing and tanginess. Was really good but would have been even better with a little more “Wok Hey”.

A mountain of finely shaved iced doused with that rich coconut milk and Gula Melaka. The Gula Melaka was not as gooey and sweet - nor was it as fragrant as I had hoped - but the green chendol jelly definitely made up for it - they were lusciously soft and aromatic - infused with that fragrant pandan taste. And the red bean was cooked to perfection - soft but not mushy. Arguably one of the better chendols around...!!

Ok. Now that we are done with Chendol - what are we going to try next...!! 🤣🤤

Heard about the Char Siew and Roasted Pork at Roast Paradise is another must-try.

Ordered 100g of Char Siew and Roasted Pork to share. Boy oh boy - it was so good! The Char Siew was well-seasoned and caramelised - and a little sweater than the other Char Siews that I’ve had. The meat was tender and I particularly liked the charred edge. And if like those Char Siew from Fook Kin - you will like these from Roast Paradise.

The Roast Pork was OK - nothing to shout about - but did it went well when eaten with the slightly tangy mustard on the side.
.
Disappointed they they ran out of noodles though - heard that it’s pretty good too - but I guess I will never know unless I come back again! Oh well...maybe next time!!

He claims that Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee serves one of the best Lor Mee in town. Unfortunately it was closed. So, we did the next best thing - we had Xiang Ji Lor Mee - that was located at the same Hawker Centre - instead.

Xiang Ji Lor Mee came with generous topping of fried fish flakes and fish chunks, pork belly slices, Ngor Hiang, half of an hard boiled eggs, bean sprouts, chopped red chillies and sambal chili which gave that added heat to the dish, minced garlic and garnished with Chinese parsley. And although I didn’t get to try Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee - Xiang Ji Lor Mee did not disappoint at all. The sauce was thick, gooey and flavourful - I added a little more vinegar for a better balance of that vinegary and spiciness in the sauce. And it was so good that I finished up all that sauce.

So if Xiang Ji Lor Mee is already that good - at least to me - then I gotta come back again to try Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee - and when I do, they had better not be closed...!!

Haven’t been very successful - well maybe one or two nice shots - but it’s been fun!!
.
And by the time I’m done - it already 8:30-8:45pm - so I normally I will head to Rasapura Masters - MBS foodcourt to have a quick bite.
.
And for tonight - it’s the Butterfly Pea Flower Nasi Lemak with Rendang Chicken - which is the star of the meal. The Chicken - stewed in aromatic spice and coconut milk - was tender - and that gravy was so very flavourful and creamy. Truly a delightful meal.

I like places where I do not need to crack my brain deciding what to order - and this is one of those places - cos at Ginza Tendon Itsuki - you only have a choice of either the Seafood Tendon or Vegetable Tendon - I chose the former. My Tendon came with 2 pieces of prawns, 2 pieces of chicken, 2 long beans, 1 baby corn, 1 piece of mushroom and 1 piece of sweet potato - and topped with those flavourful sweet tempura sauce. Each rice bowl also came with a chawanmushi - which was delightfully smooth and silky - and a bowl of miso soup.

The batter coating of the Tempura was just nice - but unfortunately, it was slightly soggy instead of getting that crunch in every bite - but I’m totally fine with it. What I liked best about this meal was that little surprse hidden under all those tempura pieces - a fried poached egg - break it and that deep bright yellow yolk start to ooze out from it. Yumz...! And while the taste of food can be subjective - I’m glad my friend enjoyed his birthday lunch treat...!!

Decided to introduce my friend to this inexpensive but satisfying meal for lunch - the Hokkaido-styled Butadon rice bowl at Picnic (Wisma Atria)

As always, the chargrilled pork was tender, well-marinated and loved the sweet tare sauce glaze. However - I was a little disappointed this time cos the meat was a little on the fatty side - having said that - lunch was simply satisfying...!
