A good affordable food option located in town!
Tucked away at the corner of Lucky Plaza, an eating house that has been around for years. A number of people come here to have a quick meal during their lunch break because it's both cheap and good.
At just $4.20, I got this sizeable portion of roasted duck kway teow in gravy. The duck was super tender while the skin still had that crisp even with the gravy. Today, I felt that the gravy was a tad too oily and I wished it was more viscous. But the duck together with the signature chili sauce made this such a treat.
Value for money set meals at Kyoaji!
Nestled on the 4th floor of The Centrepoint is a newly opened Japanese restaurant, Kyoaji Dining. It serves both traditional and modern innovative dishes. Though the ala carte dishes are considered pricey here, the set menus are definitely worth a try.
The restaurant appears polished and sophisticated, which led me to have high expectations of the food. However, those expectations fell slightly short. Don't get me wrong, the food was good (I had the Bento set meal consisting of well-cooked unagi, crispy tempura, thick sashimi slices and AWESOME chawanmushi) but nothing new was brought to the table. I also tried my companions' dishes and it was still the same consensus.
I left very satisfied though as I thought it was well worth the money. Especially since there's the restaurant's Opening Promotion of 15% total bill till 30 Nov! Also, for UOB cardholders, enjoy an 8-course Omakase meal for S$60++ instead of S$100++! Definitely coming back to try that.
Mmmm... Pork...
A walk around Marine Parade Hawker Centre and you'll notice many old-school signboards, an indication of how many hawkers are still in business after all these years. One such stall is Kun Ji (Duck Rice, Duck Porridge, Roast Meat).
I've heard good things about the roasted pork here so I gave it a try. The shao rou is definitely succulent with that all important crackle of the skin. The char siew was tender and sweet. Overall, it isn't the best but it's so darn good. A simple plate of either char siew rice or shao rou rice is $3 but a combo of both is $4.

Still thinking of what to have for brunch this Sunday? Fret not!
The braised beef cheek with carrot kimchi would make anyone's heart (and stomach) content! The beef cheek literally tears upon contact because it's so tender and it just melts/emulsifies in your mouth. Even though the flavour of the beef is rich and robust, it goes well with the heartier sides: carrot kimchi, sweet potato and potato mash, wholemeal toast, and of course, a beautiful poached egg. 😋 #burpproved
Oh yeah, did I mention that Montana's brunch menu is available all day?! 😜
Thank you Ying for the warm hospitality and Burpple for the tasting invite!
The star of the evening was the unexpected Foie Gras and Scallop Sushi (S$24++ for two pieces)!
It was pure cognitive dissonance. I didn't know whether I wanted to gobble it whole and quickly, or to savour each bite slowly. What I was sure of was that it was pure bliss. When I bit into the sweet glazed pan seared foie gras and Hokkaido scallop, it was an ultimate flavour and texture explosion. #Burpproved
A crowd favourite at Kinki!
Pretty much every table had at least one bowl of this magical donburi. The wagyu foie gras donburi, just the words would make one salivate.
A generous portion of thinly sliced wagyu beef that tears with just one bite, is mixed together with an equally generous amount of pan seared foie gras chunks. Both resting on a bed of fluffy steamed Japanese rice.
Dinner becomes awkwardly silent because everyone would just be stuffing their mouths with this dish. #Burpproved!
Enjoy ongoing promotions, AMEX Love Dining and Entertainer 1-for-1! I managed to get 50% off the entire bill except drinks!
A jolly good creperie along Circular Road!
For all things crepe, ranging from the typical sweet to unusual savoury, @ocomptoir79 serves them all.
I had their duck crepe, "Duck It!". Encased in the folded buckwheat galette is a mixture of shredded duck confit, caramelised onions and potato chunks.
The duck bursts with flavour but the dish is definitely best enjoyed with company as it can get pretty monotonous for your palate to finish the dish by yourself.
One should also try the "Mustard Day" which is lighter as well as anything with Nutella. 😋 There's also 1-for-1 on The Entertainer app!
Fei Fei Wanton Mee is strangely familiar to what I used to eat in primary school days. Small old-school dumplings that burst with that pork flavour. Thankfully, the noodles were great when I had them as they were springy and had a nice bite.
What I loved were the fried wantons that came with a sweet sauce. THOSE THINGS ARE ADDICTIVE.
Even though it's a served with a soup-spoonful of chilli, I found the gravy bland as well as the soup which was quite a pity and brought down the whole dish a notch.
Some legit fishball noodles right here.
Finally found some good food near my workplace in Ubi. Li Xin Fishball Noodles can be found at various places in Singapore such as ION Orchard, NEX, Suntec, Chai Chee and at BreadTalk IHQ!
I fell in love with the Specialty Noodles (S$5.50). The dish comes with the franchise's signature yellowtail fishballs, fish cake and dumplings. You can definitely taste the freshness with just one bite from those bouncy treats. What I also love is the sauce which is a blend of chill and sweet ketchup that makes the noodles slurp-worthy. My noodles were a tad undercooked and they clumped together but dayum, give me this and I'll be such a happy camper. #burpproved
It's one of those rare moments that I get to eat far from my office! So I tried to make this opportunity worthwhile by having the popular duck rice from Ghim Moh Market.
There'll constantly be a queue of about 10 people but it moves pretty quickly so fret not. The stall offers only duck rice, duck noodle/kway teow and porridge. Also, it only serves braised duck, not roasted.
Why this place is good is because of the juiciness and tenderness of the duck slices which few other places can emulate. The rice grains do not clump together and makes every mouthful, pleasant to eat. One ought to go for the sets, also priced at $3/4/5 which comes with half braised egg, peanuts and bean curd!
One of the best truffle fries around!
The Autumn Truffle Fries (S$26++) are the kind that stays crisp even after being out on the table for some time. Served with a generous portion of black autumn truffle shaving, Parmesan cheese and an awesome truffle mayo dip. I guess my only gripe would be the price. Yowch!
