For a limited time only till 31 August, Shimbashi Soba is offering an upgrade for any a la carte soba to matcha soba at $2++! This adds an earthy umami taste to what I already think is great soba. I know you can barely see the soba in my favourite tenchirashi soba dish ($18.80++) because it’s under all the tempura but check out how intense the green is!
One of my favourites at @mischief.sg - the pulled pork fettuccine (S$23++). As it pulls up on the table, one can immediately distinctly smell the spicy chorizo sausages. The pasta holds firm even though it’s been doused in a watery tomato sauce. The think chunks of pulled pork and bits of bacon make this for a hearty meal.
Good and halal-certified burgers!
I was browsing Golden Mile Food Centre and I noticed the long queue snaking from Burgs, a Muslim-owned stall selling burgers. The kiasuness in me told me to join the queue not knowing what I was getting into.
I had ordered the double version Burgs’ bacon & cheese burger. I was set back by 30 minutes from the queueing and waiting for collection. My friends had all finished their respective meals by the time I got my food. So was it worth the wait?
Now both the beef patties were perfect and extremely juicy. Almost impossible not to make a mess. The large strips of beef bacon were a blessing atop the melted American cheese and BBQ sauce. It was a really beautiful burger. But was it worth 30 minutes? Not really. You’re better off trying many other great options around the food centre but I must say that Burgs is still a must-try.
Taking okonomiyaki to the next level.
Sumo Bar Happy lobster okonomiyaki is what dreams are made of. Oozing out of those thick chunks of Boston lobster tail with every bite is the koji butter which brings out a delicate sweetness of the crustacean.
The cabbage and pickled onion pancake is also very much of the star of the dish as the texture remains even with all that okonomiyaki and butter sauce drizzled on it.
Perfect tonkatsu 👌
I used to switch between Saboten and Tonkichi but over the years, the standard at Tonkichi has dropped which makes Saboten the clear winner here.
I had the Kurobuta Special Set (S$30++) which is part of its US Kurobuta menu available till 30th April. The set comprised of prawn, a half-sized loin katsu, a mini hire katsu and a crab croquette as well as cabbage, chawanmushi, miso soup, pickles, rice and ice-cream. Pretty worth it!
Each of the fried elements really stood out. Inside its crispy exterior was uniform juiciness throughout the pork. I was just utterly impressed with my meal.
Eight slices of truffle goodness.
La Nonna isn’t just the name of the restaurant but also a self-titled signature pizza. The thin crust is tomato based and embellished with toppings such as melted mozzarella, flakes of parmesan, crunchy asparagus, fragrant truffle and a beautiful runny egg. La Nonna means The Grandmother in Italian which I would infer that it’s no-nonsense, no-fusion - just simple ingredients that speak for themselves.
Entertainer 2018 can be used here which makes this pizza incredibly value for money!
“Which do you like better?”
I was put on the spot by Yen, the Manager of Uya 四代目菊川 Unagi Restaurant when she asked me this seemingly proverbial question about whether I liked Uya or Man Man better.
Having my hitsumabushi (M - $35, L - $48) was a pleasant and enjoyable experience. With the multiple ways to eat this dish using the dashi broth, Kochi mi sansho and other condiments, it was a treat for the senses. The unagi was smokier than its counterpart and less doused with sauce. I prefer this version as it’s not too sweet and my rice retains its integrity.

So my verdict is that Uya is better for my aforementioned reasons and I hope that quality will remain.
One of the best meals I’ve had in KL my whole life!
It comes from a coffee shop or an institution as my friend calls it called Restoran Wong Kee. The roasted pork is to die for. On first bite, I let out a gasp and the neighbouring tables stared at me. No kidding!
The meat is so so so juicy and tender but of course, the best part is the crackling of the skin which was as crispy as keropok but of course with that crazy lardy flavour. It opens at 1230 and it gets sold out quick. Make this a mandatory pit stop whenever you come to KL!
First meal in Vietnam!
This restaurant is located in such an inconspicuous place - in an alley along the railroad. Tried the smoked goose breast (Luon ngỗng xông khói) [VND120k/ SGD7.20] because it’s hard to find geese in Singapore but darn, it was delishhhh. Singapore doesn’t know what it’s missing.
The mouth size pieces were super tender and they had a tiny lining of fat which made it so juicy and so flavour packed. It’s really good with a bowl of white rice alone. My only gripe is that the ratio of meat to
A super sick combo uni and negitoro!
A good friend recommended me this place for the uni bowls so obviously I had to try it. I decided to have have a full portion of uni and half a portion of negitoro is S$45.80++ while a regular bowl of uni is S$37.80++ so yeah! Worth it!
The sweetness of the uni matches the light savouriness of the tuna and it’s perfect when the marinated egg is well mixed in. The uni isn’t top grade as you would expect from high-tier omakase restaurants but this would definitely settle any cravings.
If you wanna have the uni bowls, it’s highly important to reserve a table AND the uni as well to avoid disappointment.
Super affordable Korean stew in the heart of the CBD!
What's great to have especially with all the rain nowadays is a hot piping Korean stew. @jjigaejjigae offers different jjigae sets such as pork, beef, beef & pork, seafood (pictured, $16.90 for 1 pax and $28.90 for 2 pax).

A lil gem along Circuit Road.
Heavenly Snacks 天下小吃 serves delectable fun-sized pieces of muah chee. I find these dollops of glutinous rice dough more refined than typical muah chee stalls because it's way less oily.
100g of the brown sugar white muah chee (peanut) goes for $2.50 and the brown sugar black muah chee (black sesame) goes for $2.80!
