It came as a surprise that being a dim sum place, Mongkok Dim Sum serves quite a tasty beef hor fun. Tossed in a starchy, peppery thick gravy, I could already smell the strong wok hei coming from the hor fun that was stir fried prior to the drenching of gravy. In addition, the tender beef slices were rather large in size which was a bonus. Probably one of the dishes you mustnât miss here.
This legendary dish has always been the talking point of Bedok 85, with a few similar stalls vying for the crown. I went as a Westie with no prejudice, without reading reviews of any of the stalls, and picked this stall by random as it looked like it had no queue. I thought I was lucky, until the owner told me it was a 25-minute wait. Might as well, since I have already traveled so far.
It was pretty oily, with lots of garlic oil and the fried shallots, though I wouldnât mind as they helped to lift the overall aroma. I canât fathom out the reason why itâs popular, perhaps the mince pork has a higher ratio of fats to meat, which personally isnât to my liking. The egginess of the noodles was accentuated after being soaked in the soup that tasted strongly of MSG. Nothing too special about the meatballs either. Perhaps itâs just a comfort food dish, but personally I still prefer my Bak Chor Mee dry and I wouldnât travel specially for this.
Happy Birthday Singapore! đ¸đŹ Whatâs a better way than to enjoy a good nostalgic tea break with your loved one? After the closing of Chin Mee Chin, I guess this would be my choice to come to for an old school kaya toast treat.
Itâs so satisfying just by looking at them toast the buns till fluffy with crispy edges, and the smearing of a thick traditional Hainanese Kaya. The donut was pretty decent too, not as greasy and sweet as the traditional types which I would have preferred, but thatâs just the unhealthy me. I loved my yuan yang while the boyf was happy with his Kopi gao. Could almost imagine them filtering with the traditional coffee sock filter in those metal cans!

Still the ever consistent Hojicha soft serve that left a deep impression on me ever since my first visit at Twenty Grammes, with its light aromatic roasted tea flavour and the edible flowers. Topped on a crispy Belgian waffle with banana, berries and chocolate hazelnut sauce.
The Isabelle waffles was a first time for me, it has no soft serve or ice cream, but replaced by Greek yoghurt. Served on charcoal waffles, alongside toppings such as peaches, berries, banana, granola, pumpkin seeds and maple syrup. It seemed rather healthy, but the yoghurt with waffles match didnât appear to work out well, especially with a strong fermented taste and didnât quite melt into the waffle. Felt like a really heavy dessert and I would rather stick to ice cream with waffles in future.
@fortheloveofcreatures has taken its rendition of this local fare to a whole new level, with a touch of royalty. In a bowl much bigger than my face, there lies wok fried noodles in rich fragrant prawn broth, served with 2 fresh crayfishes, tiger prawns and squid, topped with generous serving of crispy pork lard, tobiko and a side of home-made sambal belacan.
Explosion of umami was beyond imagination, especially evident in the rich prawn broth, which I repeatedly drenched over the noodles. As if the savoriness wasnât enough, tobiko was delightfully added which brings along a mildy salted taste and a popping experience. My only complaint was the crayfish were a little dry and the prawns could have been more juicy. Stir in their home-made sambal belacan for a spicy kick, and a hint of shrimp flavour. Having tasted such an atas Hokkien Mee, I have no regrets in life. đ
Reservations are highly recommended for 2 seatings; 6pm and 8.30pm. As we were present for the first seating, a miscommunication of the time we had to clear the table resulted in some unhappiness. I would think that diners should never be told to change tables in the midst of their meals. Afterall, you would like to enjoy a lovely meal in peace, wouldnât you?
I was pleasantly surprised that this sticky date and toffee pudding wasnât overwhelmingly sweet. Instead, it was of a right balance of sweetness even with the caramellic toffee sauce. Wonderful pairing when the warm pudding topped with cereal crumbs (especially the interior as we cut it open) meets the cold vanilla ice cream. You know the vanilla ice cream served is good stuff when it withstood the time we took for photographs.

An unassuming dessert on the menu being underrated. This local flavour-inspired dessert is one worth trying. Just look at the mozzarella cheese pull that drags the traditional hand-churned Hainanese kaya along, tasted just as tantalizing as it looked. A brilliant move to add cheese on top of the sweet kaya for an extra savoury dimension, although the kaya spread could be a little more generous. Toast was crispy, while the melted cheese was wonderfully controlled with a slight crisp. What a simple and homely dessert.

Ahh those colours of the burger, so mesmerizing! One would be able to tell the effort put in cooking the slow cooked pork shoulder, which was sandwiched between the 2 fluffy Brioche pillow buns. So soft (probably fell off the bone!) that doesnât require much chewing, yet displaying an explosion of flavours with its sweet smokiness. An addition of the purple cabbage slaw enhanced the overall tanginess and an extra crunchy bite.
Served with fries and mesclun salad.

I have always been a big fan of ciders when it comes to the choice of alcohols, something relatively fruity and more acceptable for people who canât really drink. Pleasantly delighted by this Apple Crumble Apple Cider served at Orh Gao, a flavour that I have never come across, much less imagining that a Cider of a dessert would exist.
Infused with cinnamon, vanilla and blackberry leaves, a sip of it made me felt as though I was eating an actual apple crumble, especially with a strong gush of cinnamon aroma. Accentuated by an intense vanilla taste, I truly enjoyed the sweet depth of this mouthwatering Cider.

While it might not appear to be that aesthetically pleasing but rather on the charred side, this Cajun roasted chicken leg was really well marinated with spices which could be evidently tasted from the skin. It was also the char that had us enticed on the crackling skin. Underneath was some juicy tender chicken meat of a bright color that was so easily torn.
Served with really crispy shoestring fries, mesclun salad and orange citrus vinaigrette. I couldnât stop munching on the fries.

Having tried the Chahan Unagi on the first visit, I thought the fried rice here was somewhat similar to that garlic fried rice even though it was stated as a Buah Keluak Fried Rice. I appreciated its fragrant wok hei with a spoonful of mashed buah keluak and chili paste akin to hae bee hiam (or spicy fried shrimp sambal) which really added a spicy kick.
Fried with shiitake mushrooms and chicken chunks, I was surprised to find that the chicken chunks were added separately instead of tossing in the buah keluak paste, which I felt could have been done so to enhance the overall buah keluak impression.

@kookscreamery does wonders, especially by fixing a disappointing dinner. I underestimated how popular it was until I witnessed the never ending crowd despite limited seating space.
Although there were only 2 options for the lava cookie, signature chocolate and matcha, they have quirky ice cream flavours such as the mermaid spirulina, and the blue chai Hokkaido milk. Surprisingly, the lightly floral blue chai Hokkaido milk flavour was a perfect marriage of flavours with the slightly bitter matcha lava. While the other set we had was a chocolate explosion, as the cold classic rich dark chocolate melted into the warm milk chocolate lava that was oozing out of the warm cookie.
Each cookie is made upon order, hence a short waiting time should be expected. It breaks instantly as the scoop of ice cream sits on top, and watching the molten lava oozing was quite comforting. While I enjoyed the chewy texture and a buttery aroma of the cookie, I also noticed the different toppings they had for different ice cream like cookie crumbs and corn flakes. Each #burpplebeyond set comes with a serving of tea, ranging from black, green to fruit tea, which we welcomed for cleansing palates. I am happy to have found my motivation to travel to Serangoon. đ
Thanks to #burpplebeyond, I got to enjoy 2 cookie lava sets with drinks at the price of 1!
