It’s our first time trying 生煎包, which is also referred to by some as the ‘fried and crispy 小笼包’.
Take note to bite into it slowly and enjoy the hot flavourful broth oozing out from the inside. The twisted top of the bao is pan-fried to golden brown, tasting deliciously crispy in contrast to the soft minced pork meat filling! We love such simple Chinese food and this item is something we would reorder the next time we revisit.
It was our first time trying Acai bowl and we were pleasantly surprised by the taste and consistency! It was icy, creamy and a perfect dessert to cool yourself down in a warm afternoon. We ordered the Supermodel and the Ironman acai bowl, both generously topped with a variety of vibrantly-coloured fruits 🍓🍌🥝. The berries in the Supermodel bowl gave it a slightly sour profile as compared to Ironman. If you are not a fan of sourness, we would recommend you to try the Ironman bowl instead.
Aside from their famed tiramisu, do check out their brunch menu! The mega breakfast we ordered came in generous portion and is definitely perfect for sharing. Like many breakfast platters, this came with two plump and juicy sausages, crispy bacon strips, fluffy scrambled eggs, golden hash browns, soft sourdough bun and some sautéed mushrooms and greens by the side. Nothing beats a good and hearty breakfast like this to kick-start our day! On top of the delicious food and cosy interior, we would also like to applaud the service crew for being so friendly and attentive to our needs. This is definitely a place we would visit again!
We are back at Communal Place again! This time to try out their French Toast! The thick brioche toast cubes were pan-fried to a nice golden brown and was crispy on the exterior, and super soft and pillowy in the centre. The underside of the toast was smeared with a nice layer of Nutella and is topped with ample Oreo and cookie bits to give the dish that extra crunch. Be sure to spread that cube of butter and drizzle some maple syrup for that extra sweetness and richness of flavour! While this may not the best French Toast we have tasted, it is still worth trying to satisfy a sweet tooth.
We were constantly intrigued by the snaking queue formed outside this shop and finally understood why when we tried it ourselves.
Their generously portioned tendon came with two large prawn tempura and an assortment of other deep fried goodness like squid, chicken breast, mushroom and vegetables. Each ingredient was lightly battered and fried perfectly till golden brown. The tempura were super crispy and goes perfectly with the sweet and savoury sauce that was drizzled over them. Coupled with the soft multi-grain rice, this bowl of tendon is so simple yet satisfying! We would highly recommend people who love tempura to give this a try. Do consider visiting ahead of the dinner time to avoid the crowd!
What’s better than enjoying mala? Eating it in a fully air-conditioned environment! Wan Xiang Mala Xiang Guo offers a wide array of fresh ingredients for your choosing. As our spicy tolerance level are not that high, we opted for 小辣少麻 😂
Unlike other mala that we have tried, we feel that the sauce was fragrant, nicely flavoured and not overly salty. The 小辣少麻 combination works perfectly for us as we feel that it is neither too spicy nor numbing. Apart from the conventional ingredients, we would recommend you to add a portion of the fried 油条 into your bowl of mala! The fried 油条 nicely soaked up the sauce and helps add a nice crunch to the dish. Next time when you are looking for a supper spot in Kovan, do pop by this place!
Aside from their signature soondubu stew, the kimchi pancake is something you shouldn’t miss. The bright orange kimchi pancake was super crispy on the exterior and loaded with generous amount of assorted seafood and kimchi bits.
If you are someone who enjoy spicy food, we would highly recommend you to opt for the kimchi pancake over the Korean seafood pancake as the slightly sour and spicy kick from the kimchi nicely complement the seafood. This is definitely worth your every calories!
Nothing spells happiness like a bowl of hot comforting stew on a rainy day~ 🍲 We would highly recommend going for the combo meal as it is highly value for money. The combo comes with your choice of main, soondubu stew, hot stone rice and an array of side dishes. As they are very generous with their portion, a combo meal should suffice for 2 small eaters like us.
For our combo, we opted for a mildly spiced beef soondubu stew and orange chicken. We were totally delighted when we took the first sip of soup. It was super rich and so full of umami flavour! Using the most premium soybeans harvested in Paju, the freshly made tofu were silky smooth and disintegrates the moment you put it into your mouth. Definitely one of the best stews we tasted in Singapore so far!
How is it that korean fried chicken always tastes this good?! The orange chicken we opted for was super crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The sweet and tangy orange sauce that coats the boneless chicken chunks were perfectly seasoned and kept us going back for more! We were super full and satisfied at the end of the meal and would surely be back to try the other items on their menu 😀
On top of the pasta dishes we have ordered, we also decided to give the grilled pork chop a try to see how a classic dish like this would fare in this café. One thing for sure, we were impressed by the presentation of the grilled pork chop when served. The thick slab of meat was grilled to perfection with beautiful seared marks. The tender and juicy pork chop was accompanied by the smooth and velvety mashed potatoes, sweet softened apples slices, and braised purple cabbage that helps add a splash of colour onto the entire plate. Served by the side was a white cream-based sauce for you to dip and pair the meat with. Although we like how moist and flavourful the pork was, we felt that the sweet notes from the softened apple slices and white cream-based sauce does not really go well with this savoury dish. Thus, we might probably give this dish a miss the next time we visit.
Located behind Serangoon Stadium, Eleven Strands is a well-hidden café serving delectable French-Italian cuisines. Famed for their pasta dishes, we decided to give their signature beef short rib pasta a try! Although the linguine we opted for was slightly too hard for our liking, the perfectly seasoned red wine sauce that coated the pasta made up for it! Hidden beneath the strands of linguine were huge chunks of slow-cooked beef short ribs. These short ribs were fork-tender and have perfectly absorbed the essence of the red wine sauce. We can totally feel the robust red wine sauce oozing out of the tender meat with every bite we took. We feel that this dish is definitely worth your calories and money as they were very generous with the portion of short ribs. We will be back to try more dishes next time!
It is usually quite hard to find a good choux pastry, but South Union Park’s rendition of this classic French pastry was simply delightful! The light and airy choux pastry was generously piped with mildly sweet hazelnut bavarian cream and topped with candied hazelnut bits on the crisp exterior for that added crunch. We like how the dessert wasn’t too cloying and feel that it is perfect for those who are looking for a light dessert to complete their meal!
This café has been on our to-go list for the longest time and we are glad that we finally got to try their signature molten lava cookie! We ordered the kooks signature lava set which came with a chocolate molten cookie and a single scoop of ice cream of our choice – brown butter! 😍
It was so satisfying seeing the gooey molten chocolate spilling out when the scoop of ice cream hits the warm and soft cookie~ The cookie was super buttery and goes perfectly with the nutty and carmalised flavours from the brown butter ice cream. Having both hot and cold sensation from the warm chocolate lava and ice cream in one bite was quite an experience and we totally love it! However, we felt that the molten chocolate might be a bit too sweet for our liking. I think we would be opting for the matcha lava cookie the next time we visit!
