Dependable and delicious: that is what yong tau foo should be. And I'm happy to report that 5 Loaves lives up to my every expectation. They've got a decent variety of fresh vegetables and products stuffed with handmade fish paste, but what really does it for me is the soup - a light, MSG-free broth that is gentle on the palate.

Do make room for the sides like the chee cheong fun or abacus, they are sublime. The abacus seeds were not too hard nor too soft, and the rest of the ingredients were added with a controlled precision so it wouldn't become overly cloying.

Aunty let me try the dry version today. I usually order in soup but the weather was too warm today! She told me it comes with a separate bowl of soup but I didnโ€™t expect the bowl to be so large๐Ÿ˜… Iโ€™m not complaining though because the soup has no msg and is filled generously with soybeans and spring onions. You can customise your dry order with sweet sauce or chilli sauce.

The aunty of the stall is such a dear! She is so very smiley and friendly to all her customers โ—กฬˆ

My usual order of 6 ingredients in soup for $4.30 (5 ingredients + noodles/ rice for $4.30) and a side dish of tempura enoki and oyster mushrooms courtesy of the aunty of the stall. Sheโ€™s always so friendly and cheerful โ˜บ๏ธ

What I love so much about this Yong Tau Foo is that the soup isnโ€™t made with MSG (thereโ€™s a sign at the stall that confirms this). The soup doesnโ€™t leave me feeling thirsty. Itโ€™s light and flavourful with a generous helping of spring onions, fried shallots and yellow beans. The ingredients are quite basic, nothing special but the store offers chee cheong fun and Hakka abacus seeds for you to choose as an alternative to rice or noodles.

If youโ€™re wondering why my bowl is so green, itโ€™s mostly veggies, my favourite way of eating YTF!

Slurp.

Thatโ€™s how thick and gao and flavourful the Laksa broth is at ๐—™๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ผ๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ธ๐—ฎ ๐—ฌ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐˜‚ ๐—™๐—ผ๐—ผ, that I want to drink the entire bowl ๐Ÿ˜† Each ๐—ฌ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ง๐—ฎ๐˜‚ ๐—™๐—ผ๐—ผ set is super affordable, and chock full of yummy ingredients. Whatโ€™s even more amazing? You get the most unique and special sides to go with your YTF, like ๐—›๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ธ๐—ฎ ๐—”๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜€ ($3) and silky smooth rolls of ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—™๐˜‚๐—ป ($4 set with 4pcs).

The ๐—”๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐—•๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜€ ($3) are the best. A Hakka specialty made of yam, topped with sprinklings of crispy golden fried shallot, glistening slivers of shiitake mushrooms and slices of fresh scallions, itโ€™s pretty rare to find in Singapore.

The stall is run by the most wonderful people, and they are really considerate too, asking if I wanted my fried items to be placed separately on a small plate so it didnโ€™t get soggy in the soup.

Affordable prices. Yummy food. Great people. Hands down one of my favourite yong tau foo places in SG.
