With feta and spinach. I was vindicated to have sought this place out. It's one of the yummiest pastries I've eaten. It's so foreign yet so simple. The combination of ingredients was perfect.

Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe had most certainly come quite a long way since their early beginnings when we had visited them while they had first opened their doors at Katong V in 2021 — the brand had since expanded their operations to a second outlet at Citylink Mall in the hear of town which we had also visited when that outlet had commenced operations. Fast forward to July 2023 and the folks at Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe are already celebrating the opening of their third outlet — this time round at KINEX in Paya Lebar. Taking over the former location of a women’s fashion shop, the space at KINEX is perhaps Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe’s largest outlet yet that comes with a decently-sized dine-in area that can be described as a little claustrophobic for those who choose to dine in at the high tables and high chairs facing the aisle leading to the exit / drop-off point of the mall. Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe’s space at KINEX adopts pretty much the same design language and layout of its other outlets — the unique shop layout where its bakes are prominently displayed in shelves and display freezers facing the aisle where patrons can just pick and choose the bakes is also adopted here at its KINEX outlet; the space also features a dine-in area featuring a faux brick wall accompanied with wooden dining furniture and cushioned seats, which is a constant feature across all of their outlets. As with their other locations across the island, Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe’s location at KINEX pretty much carries the same selection of bakes as the outlets at Katong V and Citylink Mall — this includes items like the Vasa’s Cake, Yugoslavia Yogurt, Baklava, various Bureks and Kifla, Pretzel etc.; just to name a few. For those looking for a beverage, Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe offers Balkan Coffee, as well as a variety of espresso-based specialty coffee — other non-coffee beverages includes tea, canned soft drinks, and drinking chocolate.

Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe offers quite a number of variants of the Kifla — the Kifla itself is being described as a Traditional Yugoslavian Milk Bun Roll that is filled with various toppings. While the Kifla is available with savoury toppings such as chicken ham and cheese, we opted for a sweet variant of the Kifla considering that we had dropped by the KINEX outlet of Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe as a mid-day tea-time stop — we were craving for something sweet after having a pretty savoury lunch elsewhere. Amongst the various Kifla that they have to offer, we ended up going for the variant that comes with Vanilla Custard Cream and Almonds. This was one bread item that quite reminds us of the Scandinavian-style breads which Brawn & Brains offered in their menu; the Traditional Yugoslavian Milk Bun Roll itself came with a firm bite, with a slight natural sweetness which is rather reminiscent to that of a typical milk bun. The Traditional Yugoslavian Milk Bun Roll also holds up its shape well despite not being too dense, while the insides were well stuffed with a vanilla custard cream that is smooth and creamy carrying a distinct egginess and a subtle aroma of vanilla that was infused with the custard cream — a rather good accompaniment to the Balkan Coffee which we paired up to have with the Kifla. For those whom are uninitiated, the Balkan Coffee is pretty much akin to Turkish Coffee; a small cuppa that packs quite a strong caffeinated punch. Overall, quality has been consistent at Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe even despite the increasing number of outlets that they have opened over the years; an establishment that brings a slightly different experience to its patrons for how they had introduced a taste of Yugoslavian-style bakes to the masses — we hereby congratulate the folks behind Yugoslavia Bakery & Cafe for the opening of their new outlet at KINEX, and wish them all the best in what is to come for them!
